THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

NEW YORK, NY - With a four game losing streak hanging over their heads, the Red Sox traveled to the last place they wanted to be. The Yankees, fully loaded after free agency, were licking their chops to get at Boston. The Red Sox had just been swept 0-3 at Texas, and after a 5-1 start they were right back to .500.

The game started off well, Lester pitching effectively and the offense giving him a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the 4th. That is when things started to turn sour, and the defense was mostly to blame. The Yankees pushed Lester hard by driving up his pitch count and drawing out at-bats waiting for the right pitches. It finally payed off when Grady Sizemore bungled an easy fly ball to LF and the normally steady Jackey Bradler Jr. did the same, allowing two runners to score in the process.

Lester came back in to pitch the 5th, but he wouldn't finish the inning. More defensive miscues put Yankees on base, allowing Ellsbury and Gardener to score, and then Brian McCann finished Lester off. With a man on McCann took Lester deep, giving the Yankees a 6-3 lead and bringing Andrew Miller out of the pen to relieve Lester. Miller wasn't stellar at first, allowing another two runs, but he finished the game without allowing any more. CC Sabathia, despite allowing 3R and 9H, was excellent and kept Boston from getting solid contact all game.
