The 2017 MLB Draft was held on June 1, 2017 and included over 200 players taken in 7 rounds of picks. Here's the short list of Angel draftees.
----------------
On July 30, the fifth pitcher in the rotation to begin the season, Orlando Santana, was traded to the Chicago White Sox for a utility player named Trent Wynn and a bench outfielder, Alex Mendoza.
This was the only move made by the Halos over the 2017 MLB Trade Deadline.
----------------
Proceeding now to the offseason, the Angels had a handful of players who were eligible to become free agents including: Opening Day starter Javier Rivas, lefty specialist Andrew Irwin, long relief pitcher Nick Mueller and starting backstop Marcos Fernandez. Irwin was brought back for his age-35 season after agreeing to a $3M contract for the 2018 campaign. The Halos 2017 starting catcher, Fernandez decided to return by agreeing to a 2-year, $8M contract which included a team option for a third season. Javier Rivas ended up staying in the AL West by signing with the Seattle Mariners. The left hander was given a 2-year contract that is worth a total of $15.2M.
-----------------
The Los Angeles Angels 2017-18 offseason also included a few trades to round out the roster.
Veteran DH, Stan Conley (.266/18/51) was traded one-for-one to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a right handed reliever named Jeff Armstrong (5-5,3.90) on November 30, 2017.
Recent draft picks, Jack Grossman and Manny Fernandez were both moved in a 4-player trade with Baltimore on January 22, 2017. LA acquired SS Hunter White who slashed .276/.355/.381 with the M's and the O's in 2017 and a relief pitcher, Logan Cash. Cash working to a 5-4 record with a 5.43 ERA in 69 games with Baltimore over the course of 2017.
To clear space for the newly acquired Hunter White, the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a trade with Pittsburgh on January 23, 2017. LA sent their starting SS from 2017, Randall Ford and Noah Smallwood to the steel city. Ford appeared in 132 games for LA, hitting .215 with only 3 homers and 32 runs batted in. Smallwood who was a key member of the Halo's pen worked to a 3.63 ERA with 53 punch outs in 67 innings. To acquire these young pieces, Pittsburgh had to part with RHP Benito Martinez and LHP Graham Young. The sinkerballer, Martinez went 9-13 with a 3.62 ERA over the course of the 2017 campaign. Young has a power curveball that he used very effectively in 2017 which helped him work to a 1.57 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 28.2 innings as the Pirates lone lefty.
