At the end of the first quarter, the Arizona Wildcats probably thought the new Rebels were pretty much the same as the old ones and nobody would fault them for it as the Wildcats were leading 21-0 and had already sacked Nick Montana 5 times. The Rebels however were not ready to give up as both sides of the ball took charge: the defense held the Wildcats to 7 points for the next three quarters while the offense shifted focus from a struggling run offense to spread the ball in the air. By the end of the 4th quarter, the score was tied at 28 and overtime proved as intense as both teams scored on their first drive before the Wildcats managed to stop the Rebels on 4th and 12th to sneak away with the win.

Nick Montana continued to show tremendous leadership as he kept the Rebels huddle under control even as the nasty quick defensive line of the Wildcats made small work of the Rebels offensive line. Montana was sacked ten time throughout the game on top of being rushed at numerous other times. The young QB still managed to make many beautiful throws including two TD passes to Chris Hawk and a spectacular hail mary bomb to Michael Sullivan on the first drive of the 4th quarter to bring the Rebels within 7 points of Arizona
