If you are one of the lonely PC sports gamers out there still playing a game like MVP 05, then you probably have caught yourself pondering what happened to the good ol' days of PC gaming. You are also probably following rumors and leads as they relate to potential revivals on the PC sports scene. It seems like every couple of months there is a teaser that maybe a Madden game will make a return to the home computer, or that the release of something like NBA 2K9 on the PC will revive the glory days of the platform.

With the days getting longer and baseball on the minds of gamers who own video-game consoles, what better time to discuss something that is in most sports video games? I am hinting at the classic cut-scene that is in most sports games today.

Cut-scenes are nothing new in games; they have been around for a long time. And, if you have spent any time playing sports games over the past decade, you have probably played some games that are better at capturing the essence of a live broadcast better than others when it comes to the cut-scene. Because these non-interactive scenes are probably not going away any time soon, we should try and figure out what works best in the future, and also decide if the cut-scene truly is the way to go.

If you hang around hardcore sports gamers long enough, the topic of conversation inevitably seems to lead to some kind of "what if" scenario. I am sure many of you have thought about combining the franchise mode of one game with the stellar graphics and on-field game play of another plenty of times. And that near-perfect complete game is just what could happen if EA ever combined its NCAA Football series with its Head Coach franchise.

If you think NFL coaches have complete control of their teams, then you need to see what the college game could offer to Head Coach fans. For starters, the recruiting alone could be a whole game to many. What is offered regularly in the NCAA series could be expanded tenfold.

Online gaming has become very popular in the last decade. One reason it has become so popular is because people love to compete. And when people compete, they do so to see who is best. However, in the online world, it seems that no matter how good you are, there is always someone better. Still, inevitably, someone has to be number one -- even in the online realm.

So with that thought in mind, I recently began my quest to become the number one online player in NHL 09. Here is a little of what I have encountered during my endeavor

When a new sports title drops, anticipation surrounds the release. People scourer message boards and try to get first-hand impressions from their peers. They read reviews, watch game footage and inspect every little screen capture they can on the Web. Still, nothing beats getting it into our grubby little hands for the ultimate experience.

When a game has major flaws, especially a much-anticipated title, it is a letdown to say the least. You can hear about these problems through the grapevine, or you can discover first-hand the reason why you may have wasted your $60.

If you’re a fan of EA's NHL series, then you have had a lot to smile about. Recently, EA released patches that improve some major flaws in the game; the patches served as a wrench that tightened up some bolts on an already solid ship. Still, even with the addition of modes such as Be a Pro, you have to wonder sometimes what else could have been put in to make this game the greatest of all time. So here are five modes that will put this franchise over the top and send hockey fans into perpetual bliss every fall.

Don't you hate those screens? So do we! Patrick Williams checks in today with a look at loading screens and what works in his article, A Load Off My Mind.

Quote:
"When "next-generation" consoles were first being discussed on the Internet several years ago there were many visions of how gaming would evolve. By using online play more effectively gamers would be closer than ever; with HD capabilities the virtual world would be the most stunning and realistic ever experienced; and with super-powered machines everything was supposed to be smooth and fast, including game load times."

Due to NHL 09's critical success, the game has attracted an audience which consists of people who may not necessarily know much about hockey. Therefore, our very own Patrick Williams will be looking at several aspects of hockey. Check out his first Hockey 101 article over the new defensive moves in NHL 09.

Quote:
"Welcome back hockey fans to the first '09 edition of NHL 101, the class where we discuss the dos and don'ts of gameplay in EA's NHL series.

With NHL 09 fresh off the delivery truck and now presently in your console you are probably knee-deep in some vulcanized rubber. You probably have many questions about the game, which range from how to score on a breakaway to how to score period. Then there are others of you out there that probably just want to know what period length is best for realistic stats."

We have posted our review of NHL 09.

Quote:
"Last year, EA’s NHL 08 took home seven “sports game of the year” awards. In fact, I'm sure you picked up on that tidbit of information somewhere along the way because it has continuously been shoved down gamers' throats. (It's even on the NHL 09 box art this year!) But after such a well-revered title, how did EA Canada take it to the next level?

During the early portion of this console life cycle, EA found a formula for fun and fantastic looking hockey. The NHL series was the one franchise the company completely turned around and revived during the beginning part of the "next generation."

Do you have a specific aspect of a sports video game you just cannot do well at? For some it might be manual catching in football games, for others it might be making slick moves while driving the paint, and for some it could be running the bases in baseball. Patrick Williams explains why baserunning is still his Achilles heel in sports gaming in his article today.

Quote:
"When taking a fresh-out-of-the-wrapper sports game for its initial ride, you know the game is going to have a learning curve.

For some gamers this can be frustrating. Often, however, it can also be very rewarding and help give the game lasting appeal. Generally, I consider myself to be above average at sports video games. Years of playing the real sports and their video game counterparts have helped in this regard."

It has now been well over a week since NCAA Football 09 was released and we have seen just about every reaction possible about EA Sports newest game. Our very own Patrick Williams was in the middle of the release frenzy and checks in today with an article discussing his thoughts on how the releases reaction was received among the community in his latest article, Summer Storms: The NCAA Release Story.

Quote:
"Summer is usually a time for relaxation in the sports world. Summer lacks any real dramatic sports news. At most, all you can hope for is some kind of off-the-field NFL scandal or hot topic -- and this year has not let us down, thank you Brett Favre and the Packers organization. Still if you love sports -- and since you are here you most likely do -- and play sports video games, you know that summer means a new beginning for the next season’s titles."

Quote:
"It is no secret that EA has heard the consumers' cries for more atmosphere in games. Atmosphere is a word I have typed numerous times when referring to titles such as Madden, NCAA and NHL 0, and it is something that adds so much to the gaming experience."

This week, Operation Sports' Patrick Williams tries to solve the worldwide mystery of which five NCAA Football video games to hit store shelves are the greatest to ever be released. Some of his picks may suprise you, while some may not. Be sure to check out his article, the top five NCAA football games of all time.

Quote:
"This game was literally the “granddaddy of ‘em all.” The first college football game didn’t have every D-1A team, let alone have real college names. BYU was Provo and Penn St. was State College, but still you got the point. The game was so much fun to play -- perfect for having friends over and playing all night with a couple of bottles of Mountain Dew to help your cause."
