Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 Review

We have just posted our review of Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 for the PSP.

"Hot Shots Open Tee 2 feels very similar to just about any other Hot Shots game, but that's not a bad thing at all, assuming you're already a fan. The gameplay is very fun yet challenging, some of the quirky characters and courses are still enjoyable, and the varying game modes always offer you something different. Online play is a bit stripped down but it plays as good as it would offline. Open Tee 2 should appeal to sim golfers and casual fans alike as it's not just an "arcadey" kid's game but it's also a great way for golf newcomers to be introduced to the game in a way that's accessible and enjoyable."

Competition Benefits the Sports Gamer

In a re-run of sorts, we have republished a great article entitled "Competition Benefits the Sports Gamer," originally written by Matt Gagnon. Be sure to check out the article and add your thoughts!

"The Greek philosopher Plato once wrote, "Necessity (is) the mother of invention." If your back is up against a wall you better think quickly on how to turn the situation around. It's safe to say if you have no pressure on you, there's no need to develop the notorious "Plan B." NBA Live 08 and it’s main competitor NBA 2K8 are due to release next week (Along with Sony’s own brand of ball, NBA 08) and I cannot think of a more appropriate quote then the one above to illustrate just how good competition is for all of us sports gamers. When we get multiple titles specific to each sport that are produced by more than one company, a few things happen. First, the games are better. Second, we’re able to pick a game that fits our tastes. And third, no developers are left out of the moneymaking process. In other words, everybody wins. Competition, for lack of a better word, is good."

OS March World Series: Sox vs. Mets Game 1

Whoever said you can't decide who is going to play in the World Series this fall during spring training obviously never met our very own Chase Becotte and Matt Gagnon. Gagnon, an avid Red Sox fan, anticipates a World Series that would pain Yankee fans nationwide by matching up the Boston Red Sox with the New York Mets. Gagnon decided to challenge Chase Becotte to a seven game series to decide The Show superiority on the OS Staff.

Unfortunately for Gagnon, Becotte's Mets are coming ready to play. This is the beginning of a four part series (seven if necessary) of a simulation of the "future" World Series (ie. Gagnon's just wanting the Sox to win a fourth championship in the past 100 years). So without further adieu, here is game 1.

Sega Superstars Tennis Q&A

Yesterday OperationSports was lucky enough to listen in on a conference call led by some of the developers working on Sega Superstars Tennis. In on the call were Producer Steve Lycett and Lead Designer Travis Ryan from Sheffield, UK-based Sumo Digital. Sumo Digital development studio has worked on a wide array of games, more pertinently, the studio has developed a few recent tennis videogames: the 360 and PSP versions of Virtua Tennis 3 and Virtua Tennis World Tour for the PSP.

"With this tennis game though, Sumo Digital is taking a bit of a different approach; they've veered a little more towards the casual gamer while developing SEGA Superstars Tennis and have thus tried to make the game more accessible for all gamers. They are not only trying to bring in a wider audience via gameplay design, but also by incorporating characters from other classic SEGA franchises such as the Sonic series, NiGHTS and Super Monkey Ball."

I don't think I'm alone when I say that barring a few examples, sports titles for the latest crop of consoles haven't exactly blown our socks off. It always seems as if there's some glaring problem that holds a game back. We've rarely experienced a complete title that makes us appreciate the new technology we've invested so much into. That is, until MLB 08: The Show for the PS3 hit store shelves this month.
