After the release of a new Tecmo Bowl on the DS and a brand new iteration of the Punch-Out franchise on the horizon, I cannot help but wonder if I have been transported back to an earlier era. 2008's recent retro-revival got me thinking about other classic sports games that would translate well to our modern gaming consoles.

I have come up with seven sports franchises (yes, seven, no more, no less) dying to make a comeback. This week I will be posting numbers 7-4, then next week 1-3. Feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comments section below.

Thanksgiving week, a time to eat like a king, spend time with family, let everyone know what you're thankful for -- and a time where your precious sports games collect dust.

I remember when I was younger, Thanksgiving week meant three days with no school, and an endless amount of time to catch up on my fledgling video-game collection. It was a much simpler time back then. I had no responsibilities, and I sat at the kiddie table.

At the kiddie table, there was nothing better than talking with your cousins about how you were going to pull off a 1080 in Tony Hawk Pro Skater, all while devouring mashed potatoes drenched in heavy gravy. The older I got the more of a downer Thanksgiving started to become in the gaming department.

I have been a College Hoops 2K fan since the inception of the series back on my PS2. As a huge fan of college basketball, I always loved how 2K was able to get the little things about the game right. I loved how they would include all the teams, all the fight songs, all the mascots, all the arenas, all the jerseys, and it didn't hurt that the game always played great.

As the years progressed, the 2K engine started showing its age, and I became increasingly bored with the series up until College Hoops 2K8 was released last November. 2K8 was the pinnacle of college hoops gaming -- from the outstanding pregame analysis, to the weekly wrap up shows, to the incredibly deep gameplay mechanics, CH 2K8 was a college basketball fan's dream come true. Needless to say, I was crushed earlier this year when I heard that 2K would no longer be continuing the franchise that had left me wanting more after the release of 2K8.

It has been a couple of weeks since Christian McCleod last went over his defensive tips for NBA Live 09. With the NBA regular season upon us, Christian is here to offer up four offensive strategies which should help elevate your game.

Quote:
"Now that I've focused on the defensive side of the ball, it's time to focus on some offensive strategies that will keep you competitive against even the best of teams, CPU and human alike. As with defense, Live 09's offensive game is tricky to master. From the Quickstrike moves, to the Ankle Breakers, to the pick and roll control, Live 09 has enough depth on the offensive end to keep you practicing for weeks. There are many ways to run an efficient offense in the game, so I thought I would put forth my top four strategies."

If you have been struggling with defense with NBA Live 09, check out our newest article by Christian McLeod. In his article, Christian highlights five defensive tips which should help you improve your game.

Quote:
"As a seasoned veteran of the NBA 2K series the last 9 years, it should come as no surprise that learning how to play NBA Live 09 was a bit of a struggle. As many of you know, Live 09's control scheme takes some getting used to, and is a completely new experience to many, even those who have played the Live series in the past. The biggest struggles I faced early on during my gameplay experience dealt with the defensive side of the ball. I figured I would put together some quick tips to help with defense, and hopefully help some of you out that are still having a tough time keeping opponents from lighting you up. Without further delay, here are my five keys to playing successful defense in NBA Live 09."

Are you one of the gamers who can't seem to keep yourself tied down to just one dynasty job for a prolonged period of time? Our own Christian McLeod is and he checks in today with an article taking a look at the phenomenon in his article, I Am Nick Saban.

Quote:
"I despise Nick Saban. Ever since the Alabama head coach led my Michigan State Spartans to a 9-2 record in 1999, then left the Spartans abruptly for LSU the week before the Citrus Bowl against Florida, I haven’t been able to tolerate the guy. Saban was extremely successful in Baton Rouge (which infuriated me as a Spartan fan), but I couldn’t help but smile when Saban again showed his true nature in 2004, leaving LSU abruptly to coach the Miami Dolphins."

With games becoming more and more complex while also becoming more and more realistic, some coaches have begun to take notice and use the games as a tool to teach their players the finer points of some sports. Christian McLeod takes a look at why the coaches not on board should begin to consider sports games as a viable coaching tool.

Quote:
"After watching Little Giants over the weekend, I couldn’t help but wonder if sports games can indeed be used as viable coaching tools.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie (shame on you), the story follows a team of misfit 10- and 11-year-olds known as the Giants. The Giants are coached by Danny O’Shea (played by everyone’s favorite '90s funnyman Rick Moranis), who must coach against the city’s powerhouse Pee Wee Team coached by his former NFL star brother Kevin (played by Al Bundy, aka Ed O’Neill)."

Many sports gamers see their gaming time shrink immeasurably when they get married. Due to household chores and a whole number of other possible events, sports gaming takes a back seat for many. However, when release time of your favorite game comes around, the itch hits again. Rookie writing sensation Christian McLeod checks in today with an article on how to survive marriage and be a sports gamer at the same time in his article, Three Survival Keys for the Married Sports Gamer.

Quote:
"June 21, 2008, the day that would change my life forever. It was the day I got married, and the day my sports gaming addiction suddenly was turned upside down. Just days after the return from our honeymoon, my glorious, man’s gaming room had been transformed into a “family” room, complete with a DVR full of episodes of The Hills and various accent pillows. My usual gaming time had been replaced by “couple” time, where we would discuss our day, and do various household tasks like color coordinating our guest bathroom (joy!). I was losing my identity as a sports gamer more and more every day, and I didn’t know what to do."
