Jim Gindin, the sole developer of the Front Office Football line of text-based simulations, has once again worked with our Operation Sports staff to put together another Developer's Corner for the community's input into future development of FOF. Head to the thread at FOFC to respond directly to Jim so that your ideas can be taken into account.

"This is one of those areas of the game where I think I can learn a lot from seeing how people view free agency in multi-player leagues, and what they perceive as a good gaming experience versus a frustrating one.

If I can capture the good in that experience and somehow bring it into the single-player version of the game, I think that could add significantly to the depth of Front Office Football. Maybe to a point where the term "house rules" can be retired in much the same way Ryan Leaf left the game.

What do you think would better capture the excitement of free agency without the frustration?"

Markus Heinsohn and the OOTP Developments team just released another patch to OOTP9, fixing a few issues and tightening up the game.

Quote:
"1) Pitchers in 7-Day Lineups - You can now assign starting pitchers in the 7-Day Lineups page, giving you full control over your team when you sim a week at a time! Online leagues, rejoice!
2) Lock player position - In the Player Strategy screen, you can now lock a player into a specific position, so that the AI will not change the player's position when setting depth charts and lineups. This feature is great if you don't worry too much about your minor leagues, but you really want to teach certain individual players certain positions!

Other improvements:
- Fine-tuned player development
- Improved AI in multiple areas
- Enhanced play-by-play and news stories
- When 'owner controls budget' is disabled, then cash is factored into money available for extensions"

Head over to the OOTP Forums for more details.

Football Mogul 2009 is slated for release later on this week. Check out Ben Lewis' detailed hands-on impressions of the game and see what the new version is offering!

"Sports Mogul is scheduled to release the latest version of the much-maligned Football Mogul series at the end of this week, and we here at Operation Sports bring you the first detailed look of the game on the Internet. The new feature list for FM09 is small, since the team is more worried about fixing existing issues; and having seen some of the prior versions, that's likely a good thing. Here’s the feature set, according to the Sports Mogul Web site. The bolded features at the bottom are listed as “new features.”

Text-sim football fans are most likely sitting around with a confused look on their faces as the fall approaches. Right now there is no definitive information on what games may or may not be released and there seems to be little hope in getting any new info in the near future. However, our text-sim editor Ben Lewis is here to hopefully clear up the confusion and shed some light on what to expect in his article, Football Text-Based Sims This Fall: Feast or Famine?

Quote:
"The NFL preseason has started, and NCAA play begins later this month, but for fans of text sims, the football landscape has never been more cloudy. It is conceivable to the gaming community that as many as five new games could be released this fall. However, while several games have been mentioned by developers, and others speculated about by text sim enthusiasts, a recent poll at FOFC indicated that a significant number of text-sim enthusiasts aren't sure that they're going to see anything new in the coming months that's worth their time.

We have just posted our review of Out of the Park Baseball 9.

Quote:
"My first several years playing career baseball sims were spent heavily invested in Baseball Mogul. However, at some point, I developed a desire for a game that was deeper and more feature-laden. For my personal gaming tastes now, Out Of The Park Baseball has become the go-to option -- and the latest entry in the series, OOTP9, has taken up a good bit of my gaming time lately."

Markus Heinsohn, lead developer of the OOTP series, was kind enough to sit down with OS this morning to provide an exclusive interview in the midst of what is a very busy week for him. The latest version of the game, Out Of the Park Baseball 9, will be released tomorrow.

Quote:
OS: Thanks, Markus, for taking the time to do this during release week. What new feature or features are you most excited about in this version of the game?

MH: First, thanks for giving me the opportunity for this interview! The features I love the most are the new scouting system, the better AI, the revised player development and the ball animation & replay function. The new historical features are great as well, the results are now extremely realistic and the AI picks the right lineups & pitching staffs, which is great for guys who like to replay single seasons.

Our extensive interview continues here.

Markus Heinsohn, lead developer of Out Of The Park Baseball 9, showcased screen shots of two small new features in the game. The first is a "Hot and Not" screen detailing 25 or so players in the league who are "hot" or "cold" over the last few games. The second is a "hero of the day" addition for the day's top performers. The original thread can be found at the OOTP Forums.

OOTP 9 will be released this Wednesday, June 18th.

Out Of The Park Developments released a newsletter early this morning detailing some of the changes in the scouting model for Out Of The Park Baseball 9, which will be released this coming Wednesday, June 18th.
Quote:
The major difference between OOTP8's scouting model and OOTP9's is that you no longer hire an entire scouting team. Instead you hire your scouting director, using a system much like bidding for free agents, and he assembles a theoretical team based on his attributes and preferences. So what exactly are the scouting director's attributes you ask? Good question… The scouting directors have four ratings which you are probably already familiar with, and one preference that you are not. The four ratings are Scout Major League, Scout Minor Leagues, International Scouting, and Scout Amateurs. These are all self explanatory. The new preference is what is currently called Amateur Preference (it will probably be renamed before release). This preference has five possible values: Highly Favor Ability, Favor Ability, Neutral, Favor Tools, and Highly Favor Tools. These represent not an ability of the scout, but the method the scout uses in evaluating players. A scout that highly favors ability will put more weight on what the player can currently do than what the behind the scenes "potential" rating says.

We have posted our review of Baseball Mogul 2009.
Quote:
"The financial model has remained largely unchanged overall for Mogul over the years, which is by and large a good thing. The gamer sets prices for concessions and tickets, and decides how much to spend on the farm system, scouting, and medical staff. A nice newer feature to the series is the option for the AI to handle setting all of the above options. The interface provides the gamer with a payroll budget that's usually fairly accurate, based on current spending, and the gamer can then decide to spend as much as he wants on free agents and on sweetening the pot with cash in trade offers."
