Bring the house! Football in 2010!
Posted on January 9, 2009 at 05:17 PM.
As much as I love ESPN NFL 2K5 I've played the crap out of it. I need a break. I fill my time with other sport and non-sport games, but I always start jonesing for another football fix.

Recently I played through two full seasons (15 minute quarters) of All Pro Football and while it was a fun experience and even beat out 2K5 in some ways, the lack of a Franchise mode really hurt. I just could keep investing 30 hours of time, only to have to restart again-and-again. I moved on to Madden 09 on my PS3 a couple of weeks ago and am about halfway through my first season (Colts). I have to say that it has grown on me a little since the first time I popped it in on launch day and was so disappointed that I ejected the disc and put it away for several months before deciding to give it another go. Knowing what to expect helped a little and some of it was that I was just too wrapped up still in 2K5 last August.

Anyway, it's looking like Madden 2010 might be my only option again next summer. All Pro Football 2010 is probably a pipe dream and Backbreaker seems to have dropped off the radar completely and its doubtful that it will satisfy a true sim fan like me anyway.

I just hope EA shows the blocking, running, and defensive aspects of the game for 2010 the same love they showed to passing in 09. I like EA. I've purchased their games for a couple of decades now. Thousands of dollars later they are my only hope to finally see a football game that surpasses ESPN NFL 2K5's game play and presentation. All of the licenses are in place. EA has the tools. They can build a Madden that sets the world a blaze, while still making the corporation a mint. Here my plea EA and bring the house!

Backbreaker...there's something I haven't heard from in a while.

From your lips to God's ears. It's just becoming tougher and tougher to have any faith in EA.

I think your best bet for football gaming in 2010 will be NCAA. It's been too long they have went without a great game. Let's hope 2010 is the breakout year.

I'm looking forward to NCAA 2010 too, but Tiburon will have to get all of the stadiums in and the play clock corrected for me to really commit to spending a lot of time on the series again.

EA has definately been testing a lot of people's faith for the past couple of years. It looks like they may actually be on the verge of pulling out of the gutter. Only time will tell.

Football is behind every other sports game on next gen right now. I don't think all of the problems will be fixed for the '10 games but some seemingly easier fixes would make things a lot better. Make the cpu running game better (more realistic) rather than the joke they turned into this year. Make the cpu QBs smarter AND have them throw deep for crying out loud! The logic was fine on the PS2, how come it's taking so long to fix this? Improve defensive player control so I can actually defend the pass and make the sliders work better.

Almost forgot. EA has to seriously upgrade the DL and LB moves. Bring back left and right moves and more moves to do. I don't want one simple finesse and power move that don't work well. NCAA '06 had moves mapped to the R-stick and it was great. Better yet, go play as a DL in 2K4 and see how good the DL play can be. More control equals more fun when playing defense.

I'd love to see EA put in some animations that would allow the RB to put a hand on the back of a blocker and then smoothly break to one side or the other. 2K had a great system and Tiburon is lagging behind with something that is too much like Mario running. I do luike the dive over the pile animation and the reach at the coner of the endzone, but breaking off a block should get some love for any game claiming to care about having the user follow their blockers and look for holes.

I still think Backbreaker will be released. When is a different question...

Backbreaker will probably see the light of day, but I'm thinking it will be more of a tech demo than an actual Franchise mode having game.
