2017 Week 6: @ West Virginia
Posted on December 9, 2018 at 11:47 PM.
#7 Syracuse (5-0) @ #6 West Virginia (5-0)

Coach Bays' first ever top-10 showdown features the Orange returning to Morgantown for the first time since their statement making upset last season of the then 5th ranked Mountaineers. West Virginia will be looking for revenge this year as they will once again look to defend home field and preserve their undefeated record for one more week. WVU QB Jordan Rouse has been electric this year while also not throwing a single interception to this point. Across the field from him will be Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito who is a leading Heisman candidate and with good reason. The Syracuse offense has not faced a test like West Virginia yet this season but they should be talented enough to come away with yet another win.

Prediction: 30-28 Syracuse

This game got out of hand quickly and Syracuse ran away with it in the second half, shutting out the Mountaineers. West Virginia got some offense going in the first half but could not stop Syracuse's passing game as Tommy DeVito threw for over 400 yards and 4 scores. The running game was shut down for much of the day despite 5 scores on the ground. The biggest reason for the win was the defense not allowing big plays and forcing punt after punt by the Mountaineer offense. HB Richard Patton had a rough day on the ground but made his presence felt still by running for 3 scores and getting over 100 yards and an additional score through the air. Patton is a young player but he has already done a great job showing his nose for the endzone and should develop into a great back for the Orange. WR Allen Rawlins had over 100 yards receiving yet again but SO WR Charles Campbell was the surprise, with 6 catches and 3 scores. The blowout gave fans and coaches a chance to see quarterback of the future DJuan Reed play and he was good at making plays but showed his youth with a bad interception in the endzone when he should have given up on the play. Reed ran extremely effectively, showing his elite athleticism and versatility. This game should secure Syracuse's standing as one of the best title contenders this season as well as hoist DeVito back into the front of the Heisman conversation. Syracuse moves to 6-0 and will hit the road to play a struggling Louisville team next week.

Final Score: 65-21 Syracuse
