2017 Week 1: vs UNLV
Posted on December 7, 2018 at 07:20 PM.
UNLV (0-0) @ #23 Syracuse (0-0)

The Orange open their new campaign ranked 23rd in the nation and ready to take on the Rebels of UNLV. UNLV went just 2-10 last season and will now be competing in the MAC. For Syracuse, they return Heisman front-runner Tommy DeVito for his senior year as well as plenty of talent across the offense and defense. JR HB John Green, SR HB Markenzy Pierre, SO HB Cody Bullock, FR HB Richard Patton, and FR HB Jamar Duckett will all be competing for the starting job in the backfield alongside DeVito. At receiver JR WR Allen Rawlins, SO WR Beau Dennis, and SO WR Matt Archie all return to give DeVito weapons to throw to. SO TE Drew Brown and SO TE Larry Davis will battle for that job. On defense JR DE Ben Meade and FR DE Matt Malone are battling for a starting job, as well as the MLB competition being reopened to SO LB Pete Coleman and SO LB Shawn Anderson. Two true freshman are starting at corner alongside JR Ross Davis for the Orange this year. Syracuse should roll a weak UNLV program and move to 1-0 on the season.

Prediction: 56-10 Syracuse

Syracuse won easily but it was a good thing they took a game to warm up because the defense struggled against UNLV's offense today. Several key position battles were decided in this game and here are the results:
HB - FR Richard Patton
TE - SO Drew Brown
LE - JR Ben Meade
MLB - SO Pete Coleman
FS - JR Jeremy Key

The defense let too many big plays happen and it led to UNLV scoring 30 points on the road against Syracuse. The offense worked nearly without a flaw however. Tommy DeVito threw for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns while running for another 60 yards and a score. FR HB Richard Patton emerged as a potential star alongside DeVito, totaling over 100 total yards and scoring 3 times. The receiving core looked talented and deep across the board. The only struggles on offense were related to an offensive line that can sometimes fail to move people up front or protect the quarterback up the middle. FR CB Blake Fernando got his first career interception and was all over receivers all day, showing his coverage skills. SO SS Lance Williams missed some tackles today and showed his youth in an otherwise good performance. Next week Syracuse needs to be playing better because they will kick off ACC play.

Final Score: 48-30 Syracuse
