#16 Stanford Cardinal (8-4, 4-2 Away) | Syracuse Orange (9-3, 4-2 Home) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
This game has the look of a good one. Stanford are ranked and a powerful football program but they will have to face off with a rising Syracuse team who are eager to prove themselves on a big stage. Coach Bays won both his bowl games quite easily while with Georgia State, including an upset of Clemson in the 2013 Rose Bowl. This game will also be the final performance in the careers of WR Sean Riley and HB Tyrone Perkins.
Prediction: 27-20 Stanford

This game was the craziest game witnessed in the NCAA in a while. Stanford jumped out to a 17 point lead behind the strong play of Cameron Scarlett. After a Stanford touchdown drive to open the second half put them up 27-10, Syracuse and Tommy DeVito finished the game on a 17-0 run to tie it up. The comeback was capped off by a game-tying field goal with only 17 seconds remaining. The game went to 6 periods of overtime to be settled, finally ending with a walkoff touchdown scamper by Stanford quarterback Davis Mills. More than anything though, this game was a story of missed opportunities. With 4 minutes remaining and only losing by 3 points, Tommy DeVito tossed a redzone interception that ended a drive that could have tied the game or given Syracuse a late lead. On the final drive of regulation, DeVito missed a wide open Sean Riley in the endzone, forcing Syracuse to have to kick the game tying field goal rather than a game-winning score. Stanford missed opportunities too however. On the opening drive of overtime Syracuse threw a quick interception that meant that all the Cardinal had to do was kick a field goal to win the game. The Orange defense only allowed 4 yards but still Jet Toner had an easy kick to make for the win. The 38 yd kick was wide right and the game ended up going to 5 more overtime periods. Tyrone Perkins shined in his final collegiate game, running for nearly 100 yards and a touchdown. Devin Butler also had a monster day in his final career game putting up double digit receptions and well over 100 yards receiving. Defensively, linebacker Trey Henderson Jr, Andrew Armstrong, and Shyheim Cullen all played very well in their final games. Cullen led the team in tackles and sacks, proving to be quite a force to deal with. This game was played too sloppily to win by Syracuse but it was a heartening sign that they were still close to winning despite the mistakes. Syracuse finishes Bays' first season at the helm with a respectable 9-4 record and excitement for next year with DeVito returning for his redshirt junior season.
Final: 46-40 Stanford (6OT)
