Georgia State will open their season with a trip to New Mexico to take on the Aggies. New Mexico State is coming off of a 4-8 season while the Panthers are coming off an impressive 10-3 season. The Panthers bring in new starters all over the field including JR QB Aaron Winchester and SR HB Taz Bateman. Last season Georgia State beat New Mexico State 37-21 in Atlanta.

The Panthers stumbled out of the gates and were down 10-0 after one quarter but used a strong second half, highlighted by a 17-0 fourth quarter, to pull away from the Aggies. Aaron Winchester struggled with turnovers in his first career start but flashed the elite playmaking ability that he showed in limited time last season, scoring 5 total touchdowns. Taz Bateman just missed hitting 100 yards in his first career start, adding a very good complement to Winchester in the backfield. JR WR Penny Hart had a nice day with 153 receiving yards, mostly coming in the first half. FR DE Walter Anderson announced his presence on the defense in a big way. Despite it being his first career college game he set a new school record with 4 sacks, proving to be a menace for opposing offensive lines. Next week the Panthers will head to the blue turf to face Boise State.
