Game Notes
The season kicks off at Reser Stadium on the first of September. This game looks like it's going to be a close one. Talent wise Oregon State looks to have the slight upper hand, but don't think that that matters to WMU. The Broncos went on a 9 game winning streak with new head coach Joesph Williams. He beat every MAC opponent he faced and a touch Arkansas State during Bowl Season. Western Michigan will be coming into the season riding their huge win streak and with 4 All-Ncaa Pre-Season All-American's on their back.

Oregon State looks to have some tough games in their upcoming schedule. They have to go to USC following this game. Later on they have to go to both (#25)Arizona and (#4)Stanford. To end the season they host (#10)Oregon in the Civil War rivalry. Their coach Jonathan Flores just was hired with only 4 games left in the season. He was given a messy team that didn't know where they wanted to go. He is currently 1-3 in his short career. He hopes to turn it around soon, or he might be out as quick as he was brought in. Flores does gain the 34th best recruiting class so that is something the Beavers hope can help a lot.

Western Michigan has a much easier road. Their 4 big games come early on. They play Oregon State in this one, then host (#18) Michigan State. They play a still mediocre Colorado team and then end with a game at a very good UCONN. William just got a new contract after his 1 year test was up. WMU gave hime a 2 year, 965K deal hoping for him to continue his early success. They hope to keep the nations 13th longest win streak alive.

Oregon State gets their star QB Jay Lewis back who did pretty well last year. He threw for 2900 yards and 27 TD's against only 14 INT's. Their 2 Defensive studs are their MLB and ROLB who combined to have 127 total tackles last year with 6.0 combined sacks. Their secondary looks to be weak with their 2 linebackers having more INT's than they.

For WMU they get back their 4 star players. CB Joe Austin looks to lead the secondary who also led the nation in INT's with 8. Next would be the Broncos whole entire defensive line. The line is led by All-American Shane Henley who was 3rd in the nation in sacks with 13.5. On offense they are led by QB Lee Holiday. Holiday led the nation in completions and passing yards with over 3700 yards. He also threw only 5 picks with 32 TD passes which was 3rd best in the nation in TD/INT ration. Their huge star is RB Dave Myers. Myers led the nation in TD runs and is currently 3rd in the Pre-Season Heisman Watch.

Look for this game to involve a lot of passing from both sides. Both teams are led by 2 great QB's. WMU looks to have the upper hand on defense and their running game. Predicted Score: WMU-38 Oregon State-24

Western Michigan Broncos boast 3 All-Ncaa 1st team Pre-Season All-American's this year. They also boast 1 2nd All-Ncaa Pre-Season All-American too. In total they have 10 total Pre-Season All-American's/All-Mac players.

The 3 1st teamers are SR RB Dave Myers who led the nation in TD runs. Second would be SR(RS) LE Shane Henley who was 3rd in the nation in total sacks last year. Lastly is 2 time All-American JR(RS) CB Joe Austin. Austin was a Freshman All-American and last year 1st team All-NCAA All-American. He led the nation in INT's.

On the 2nd Team All-NCAA Pre-Season All-American list is SR(RS) TE Kevin Brown. He led WMU in catches and yards last year.

WMU has 7 players on the Pre-Season All-Mac 1st-Team. They also have 3 on the 2nd-Team All-Mac.

This also means that the Western Michigan Broncos have the most Pre-Season All-NCAA All-American's in the country. The second highest is Oregon with 3. The Broncos also have their very own RB Dave Myers on the Heisman Pre-Season watch. He currently is in 3rd in the Heisman Watch.

This could be a huge year for the Western Michigan Broncos both individual wise and team wise. They are heavily favored to win the MAC-West and the whole MAC. GO Broncos!

Info: It’s year 2 with Coach Williams at the helm. You could say year 1 went pretty well. He started off his first collegiate season on a 9 game win streak. That’s no easy task with any team let alone with Western Michigan. WMU is, sorry I meant WAS looked at as one of the bottom 15 teams in the nation. Not anymore since their 9 game win streak that consisted of their first MAC Championship in 11 years and a big bowl win to top it all off. This year they get 4 very key pieces back to try for back to back MAC Champions.

Defense – C+ : Key piece number 1 would be their 2 All-NCAA defensive studs. Shane Henley was the lead sack leader with 13.5 sacks which was also good for 3rd in the entire nation. He will be a senior this year. Joe Austin is the second key. He’s had a storied career so far at WMU. He was a Freshman All-American after being redshirted. His sophomore season was even better. He led the entire nation in INT’s with 9. Austin was a big key in keeping the Bronco’s defense together with Henley disrupting the quarterback.

Offense – B : On the offensive side they get back Senior QB Lee Holiday. Holiday had his best year yet so far. He led the nation in completions and yards passed. He was in the top 3 in TD/INT ratio with 32/5. He was helped by All-Mac RB Dave Myers. Myers led the nation in TD runs with 20. Holiday has also Eric Montgomery for a target who won an Freshman All-American award at wide out.

Projection: 11-3 (MAC Champions, Bowl Loss) : Experts predict yet another stellar year from WMU and Joesph Williams. We’ve heard projections from 10-4 to a perfect 13-1. Over 90% of the experts think that they will win MAC-West easily. The big test will be 3 road games in a row. First up would be against a rebuilding Oregon State. They’re not to be overlooked because of they’re at home. Next would be against Colorado. CU went 3-9 last year and don’t look to do much better. The last game would be the last team to beat WMU last year, UConn. UConn was beat WMU last year and following the loss Western hired Williams and fired Cubit. It turned out to be a great move so far. After those 3 hard games the next test will be in the MAC Championship game. Many predict a rematch of last year’s thriller against OHIO. Depending on those 4 games WMU could have their best season yet.

Game Notes
Both teams come in with a perfect 3-0 records. One will leave with their first loss of the season. Illinois is the favorite despite the recent success with Western Michigan.

Illinois biggest win so far is against Arizona State (1-2). Western Michigan's biggest win is easily against Michigan (2-1). WMU is also coming off their first win against CMU in 6 years.

Illinois is led by a pretty balanced attack. Their star running back J. Ford is averaging a whopping 7.3 yards per carry and already has 6 TD runs. For Western they are led by senior QB Alex Carder who has 862 yards in just 3 games.

This game looks to be a high scoring game with both teams in the top 28 scoring offenses in the nation. Also this game could have many turnovers or very few for that both teams are in the top 21 in turnover difference.

Following this game Illinois goes to play a 3-0 Northwestern squad. Western Michigan goes to play a 2-1 Uconn team.

Kalamazoo – They finally did it! After 5 grueling years Western Michigan was able to defeat the Central Michigan Chippewas. This game was no fluke either. It literally went down to the last minute to decide the game, and it wasn’t even over then.

Western Michigan was riding on their big season opener against Michigan top push back CMU. It had been 5 years since WMU had been able to beat the Chippewas. Bill Cubit wasn’t able to do it so they let him go and brought in Scott Simmons to finally get over the hump.

The first quarter went as well for WMU as they wanted. They were able to stop CMU on a 3 and out. When their offense hit the field they were able to drive with ease and scored a TD with 36 seconds left on a pass from Alex Carder. The second quarter didn’t have near as much fortune.

Quarter number 2 did not go well for WMU at all. Western gave up 17 points in a ugly fashion. All 3 of the TDs from CMU were 55 yard plus bombs for scores. Alex Carder also threw an ugly pick. The only bright part was a 66 yard TD bomb from Carder. The halftime score was 17-14 Central Michigan on top.

The second half didn’t start off any better for the Broncos. Alex Carder was still cold from the second quarter and misfired on his first 5 passes. Luckily for him and Western their defense finally stepped up. They didn’t allow any points in the third quarter. With about 2 minutes left the Broncos scored a 3 yard run from Tevin Drake. The beginning of the 4th quarter was 17-21 the Broncos.

Western Michigan was down for the first time entering the 4th quarter in the whole season. Now it was time to see what Scott Simmons was made of. CMU was able to score first with a 5 yard TD pass to make the score 24-21. The fourth quarter consisted of a lot of gutsy calls from WMU. Right off the bat Western converted 2 4th down attempts and gained them.

With only 2:25 left WMU was finally able to take back the lead with yet another deep pass. The final minutes were winding down for a game for the ages. WMU wasn’t able to stop CMU all quarter, and still couldn’t in crunch time. With 0:56 CMU scored a 12 yard TD pass to put them up 31-28 Central. It looked like WMU was going to lose their first game and 6th in a row against CMU unless Scott Simmons was made of miracles. Turns out he was. With only 18 seconds left on a 4th down he pulled off a 26 yard miracle pass for a TD.

After 6 long years the Western Michigan Broncos were finally able to beat the Central Michigan Chippewas. One of the reasons Scott Simmons was hired, to beat CMU. WMU improved to 3-0 on the season. CMU went to 1-2 on the season.

94-14 It wasn't running up the score. At least not on purpose. FCS Midwest's defense might have had one of the worst defensive performances in college footbal history. They gave up an astonishing 969 yards of offense. You say why did Penn State keep pouring on? Well they didn't, but the score doesn't do any justice. Penn State put in their 2nd and 3rd strings at the begining of the second half. The only thing was that they couldn't even be stopped either.

On the ground Penn State averaged a team record 10 yads per carry. As a team! The first, second and third string runnin backs had 100 yard performances and longs over 40 yards for each. Passing was even crazier. The Lions averaged 22 yards per throw and threw for 354 yards on only 16 attempts.

After the first half (56-7) Penn State came out running in formations that they even rarely ran out of. Yet they kept on having amazing success. FCS Midwest truely looked like not a high school team, but a junior varisty team out there on defense. It was even sad to watch from a Penn State fans eyes.

Now for FCS s offense it was a slightly different story. FCS managed 14 points and an awfuly lot of yards with over 500. They did however turn the ball over 6 times and were sacked 9 times. Their 2 scores were both long plays that easily could have been avoided.

When asked about the score of the game coach Simmons had this to say. "The score realistically should have only been in the high 50s or maybe 60s, but not 90. Also remember that 1 TD was a punt return. I really was just calling plays that we didn't practice much and tried to get my players some game time."

Another question was about things Simmons learned about this game. "I found out today that we have 2 really really good running backs that could start for anyone, and a really good backup that could start on most other teams too. Our quarterback situation is still slightly up in the air because both QBs showed that they belonged."

Asked about his backups success he answered. "I will also not stop one of my 2nd or 3rd stringers from experiencing success by telling them not to score TDs. I will not though embarrass a team by throwing when up and using 1st stringers."

Ann Arbor - It looked like it was going to be Michigan s game from the get go. Michigan s new head coach Brady Hoke stressed the importance of defense all off-season. WMU was bringing in new head coach Scott Simmons after firing Bill Cubit after 6 mediocre years. Scott Simmons was the assistant quarterback coach at his alma matter and first opponent; the Michigan Wolverines.

Early on Michigan showed their new found love for playing defense. The second play of the game was a fumble that went for 6 for Michigan. New WMU head coach Scott Simmons saw something different so he threw out the challenge flag. This was a risky call for the second play of the game, but here was his answer to it.

“The gameplan for that game was if we wanted to stay in this game that we could not, could not lose the turnover game. Also the first drive is one of the most important because it sets the tempo for the game and builds or destroys confidence for the whole game. That one play could have doomed us from the start for that it was very early in the game and could have put losing thoughts in our player s heads. We could not afford that against such a good team.”

Luckily for him, the call was overturned and his team was able to continue their first possession. With that his team took the momentum and was able to score a 4 yard rushing TD from sophomore RB Brain Fields. Now it was Michigan s turn on offense. Michigan had a top 5 offense in most offensive categories last year thanks to most of it coming from Heisman finalist QB Denard Robinson.

Early on Michigan had troubles on offense. Their first 2 drives ended with 3 and outs. On WMU s next possession Junior QB Alex Carder threw a pick after driving to Michigan s 34 yard line. This was a big set back for Western. Michigan was able to drive and got a 39 yard TD pass from Denard to WR Junior Hemingway. The First Quarter ended with a 7-7 tie. The second quarter was not really exciting for both sides. The only score was a 40 yard field goal from WMU kicker John Potter with 11 seconds left in the half.

The first half ended with a 10-7 Western Michigan Bronco lead. This was an unexpected first half for both sides. People knew the Wolverines would have some questions for offense, but only 7 points for a team that was the 3rd best scoring offense in the nation was not expected. WMU s QB Alex Carder has high expectations for his season but threw 2 early picks without any TDs in the first half after going throwing 30 TDs to only 12 INTs.

The second half started off well for the University of Michigan. On a 1 minute and 33 second drive they were able to score a 1 yard TD run from Senior Stephen Hopkins. Hopkins has battled injuries all his career after coming in as a highly touted recruit. Little did people know that it was all downhill for the great University of Michigan. Western Michigan scored 2 Rushing TDs in the 3rd quarter. The first was a monstrous 62 yard run from Brian Fields. The second was from Tevin Drake after a long drive that ended with a 1 yard TD run. The end of the 3rd quarter was 24-14 lead from the small school Western Michigan Broncos.

The 4th quarter didn’t start off any better for the Wolverines. WMU was able to score another 1 yard TD run from Tevin Drake putting the Broncos up 31-14. This gave Tevin Drake his 2nd rushing TD for the game. Michigan was only able to answer back with a 38 yard field goal that almost got blocked. The last score came from Brian Fields of WMU on a 3 yard TD run that gave him also a 3 rushing TD game.

The last 2 plays for Michigan were 2 sacks. That was not the way the mighty University of Michigan wanted to start their first game under new head coach Brady Hoke. This was the perfect game for new WMU head coach Scott Simmons. It was Westerns first win ever against powerhouse Michigan. This was only the second loss all-time for U of M against a MAC opponent. The last was in 2007 against Toledo in one of Michigan s worst years ever.

The stars for the game were the 2 running back for Western Michigan. They combined to run for 215 yards and 5 rushing TDs. The defense was an all around effort that resulted in 3 team sacks, 1 INT and 1 forced fumble that was recovered. For Michigan RB Stephen Hopkins had the best game with 99 yards on 17 attempts and 1 TD run.

After the game head coach Scott Simmons had these words to say to reporters. “This was a huge win for this team and program. We finally were able to beat a powerhouse. We hope to take this big win and carry it throughout the season. The big game for us is of course against the wretched Central Michigan Chippawas. We will not stop there though, this season will be a failure to me if we do not win the Mac title after all these years.”

Also being asked on what his plans were for when his 2 year contract was up he answered with this. “It is only the first game of the season. I am not looking that far yet. The time will come but it is not now. Our best impact players are only Juniors and Sophmores which means that this team is only going to get even better.” Simmons is a Michigan Alumni so it is expected that his dream job is there.

KALAMAZOO - With experience at quarterback, good talent at the skill positions and enough pieces everywhere else, Western Michigan University figures this is the year to make something happen.

By that, the Broncos mean, competing for the division title in the Mid-American Conference, earn a spot in a bowl game and, above all, beat their in-state rivals Central Michigan University.
Those are all expectations, according to new WMU head coach Scott Simmons.

"It's our time to get it done. We are challenging these guys, challenging the coaches, to do everything we can to get the job done," Simmons said. "We know all about that elephant in the room, we see it. We have to go out there and win that game."
That game would usually be top of mind for any WMU fan or player, but it is even more so this year as the Broncos are looking at five straight losses against Central Michigan.

Beating CMU would go a long way toward allowing the Broncos to also chase a Mid-American Conference title. Sixth-year senior wide receiver Jordan White has his eyes on both of those goals.

"I have been here six years. As long or longer than everybody here. Basically I am tired of coming up short. I haven't beaten Central yet. Nobody in our locker room has beaten Central yet. I am ready for that to change," said White, who has had his career at WMU extended due to injury red-shirt season. "I'm also ready to win the MAC Championship and not come up short in that also. And I think, with the way the guys came out this summer, and what we have here, a lot of those things are going to change this year."

Scott Simmons agrees with his senior, especially when it comes to the MAC race. The Broncos last finished first in the conference in 2000.
"It would be a disappointment if we don't win the MAC, that's how I feel. Some years you can't say that, because you are missing some pieces. But this year I don't think we are missing any pieces, I really don't," coach Simmons said.

Those pieces start with returning starting quarterback Alex Carder. Carder returns after starting every game for the Broncos last year, throwing for 3,334 yards. He had four games of 300 yards or more during his first season as a starter and eclipsed 400 yards against Toledo. His 30 touchdown passes make him only the third WMU QB to surpass that amount for a season.

While those are good numbers, Carder said at WMU's media day that he thinks he can improve on his first-season stats.
"I think I have to be more persistent. I think I have to be more patient. I think I need to take what the defense is giving me more often. I need to understand situations better. I just need to become a veteran quarterback, because last year was my rookie year and I can't make those same mistakes anymore," Carder said.

A key element to the WMU offensive attack is the passing game and Carder has some good players to throw to, starting with White, who is the school record holder for receiving yards and 100-yard receiving games. White caught 94 passes for 1,378 yards and 10 touchdowns past year.
Giving the team some balance will be a running attack that returns three players that rushed for more than 300 yards on the season last year in Tevin Drake, Brian Fields and Aaron Winchester.

WMU has some questions to answer on the offensive line, only returning two starters in Dann O'Neill and Anthony Parker.

The Broncos don't have that problem on the defensive line, returning the entire group and making that a strength of this team. WMU is led on the defensive front by senior defensive tackle Drew Nowak who had 42 tackles from his interior spot. Junior defensive end Paul Hazel also returns after coming up with eight sacks last year.

WMU's leading tackler from a year ago returns in linebacker Mitch Zajac, who had a career-best 97 stops last year, but he is the lone returner in that group this season.

Freshman All-American Lewis Toler leads a WMU defensive backfield that will lack experience. He is the lone full-time starter from a year ago and had five interceptions.

WMU will look to get all of those position groups up and running quickly as the Broncos have plenty of work ahead of them with a very tough early schedule.

The Broncos open with the University of Michigan on Saturday and also play at Big Ten power Illinois and at UConn, which went to a BCS Bowl last year, all in the first five games.

"The first five games of the schedule are tough, but that's what we do here. Our team embraces that, our administration embraces that and our fans should embrace that," Simmons said. "And it all starts with the first game against Michigan, and that's what we are pointing at right now."

64 and 0. The Boise State Bronocos have 0 losses on the Blue Turf in conference play. EVER. 64 is the number of consecuative home games that the Broncos have won. Well, there are 2 new numbers to know now. 0 and 1. They are now back to 0 on their home game winning streak. The broncos in the first time since 1999 loss on their Blue Turf by a conference rival. You may ask which powerhouse school did they let in? Non; the small brother Colorado State Rams fought a battle from begining to end. It all started on the goal line, and ended on the goal line.

In the many years of existance of the Blue Turf never had a conference opponenet won there. 12:30pm Saturday, October 15th, 2011 is the date that all of that came to the end. This to the most unlikely opponent of them all. The players to look out for were QB Al Schneider and RB T.J. Neal on the bronco's side. For the rams it was QB Mike Stevenson, TE Jason Atkins and SS/WR James Graves. T.J. leads the whole MWC in rushing yards and average yards per carry. Jason Atkins leads the MWC in receptions and tied in first with TD's. It all started with a 5 minute and 44 second drive to start the game from Colorado State.

The best way to beat the Bronco's #1 rush defense was to well, pass it. That's exactly how Johnny Fudd attacked; with passing assaults throught the middle. CSU also tried to mix a liittle run game that actually worked to a certain extent against one of the toughest defenses in the past years. The first score was a 3 Yard goal line pass from Mike Stevenson to Tom James Boise state went 3 and out on their first possesion. The rams aren't known for their lockdown defense but were able to prevail first, and that's all they needed to keep momentum. Quarter 1 ended with a very early CSU lead that wasn't expected, and not expected for long.

Quarter 2 took just as long for the huge underdog Colorado State rams to score. With another long drive the Rams scored with a 9 Yard run from Bill Odom with just 1 minute and 24 seconds left in the first half. CSU was actually up 14-0 with the possibility of shutting out Boise State at halftime, on the blue turf. Well they weren't done scoring yet folks. On the very next possesion, Al Schneider threw a pick which led to a 17 yard run from Bill Odom to put the rams up 21 to NOTHING. You read that right, the small school Colorado State Rams were leading powerhouse Boise State 21 zip. At the Blue Turf to top it all off! Boise State wouldn't have non of this so in the last 12 seconds they threw a huge 52 yard bomb for a TD that made it a 21-7 halftime score. This wasn't expected from anyone, and probably not half the CSU team either. Only Johnny Fudds of CSU thought that his team could win it, and only time would tell.

Does the small school Colorado State Rams have what it takes to upset MWC powerhouse Boise State Rams? Or does Boise keep their home streak alive and chew them up in the second half?
Second Half Analysis after the break.

The 3rd Quarter started off fast, and stayed fast for the Boise State Broncos. The Broncos drove down the field in just 50 seconds that led to a 17 Yard Pass from Al Schneider to Corey Woods. The game was now going back into the Broncos favor with a 21-14 score All the Rams could do the next drive was manage a long 48 yard field goal to make it 24-14. A developing story was that of the injuries of the 2 star players on both teams. T.J. Neal of the Broncos suffered an injury early and so did James Graves. Both were sorely missed throught the game that might have gone a different way if either were in. Late in the 3rd the Broncos drove and again resulted in a Passing TD from Al Schneider that ended the 3rd with the score 24-21. This game was gaining huge hype throughout and this 4th quarter was building up as one for the ages.

The 4th quarter is the point that most powerhouse teams show their dominance in a close game against a much lesser school. The 4th started off like this with 2 field goals from Boise State to make the game 27-24 with 5 minutes and 20 seconds left. CSU was given the tough task to drive the field and score atleast a field goal, but had to wind the clock down at the same time. It woudl be an easy task if they weren't going up against the best run defense in the nation. The next drive decided CSU's fate and was one of the most nerve racking and conterversal drives in reecnt memory.

The last Colorado State drive featured a 3 minute and 7 second drive that seemed to take ages. CSU had 2 3rd downs and one 4th down that became a controaversial matter. On 4th and 5 on the Broncos 17, CSU lined up to kick a field goal. After 2 timouts from Boise the Rams finally got a chance to kick it. Except it wasn't meant to end like this for it was a offsieds penalty from Boise State that made it now 4th and inches. The question was for the Rams to go for it, or go for the tie. Johnny Fudd decided that they hadn't came this far to possibly lose in over time so he decided to do his best to end it right here. The 4th and inches conversion was sucessful with a FB dive and then followed up a 8 yard TD run from backup RB Dan Fugua. Score was 31-27 CSU rams with a little less than a minute and 27 seconds left.

In the second half Boise had no trouble driving the field quickly and it showed on their last possesion. The Broncos drove quickly down the field. It looked like trouble for a tired CSU defense that showed that they couldn't stop them. Then it all came down to one play. After 3 straight failed completions from Al Schneider, the Broncos were facing a 4th and 10 at the Rams 34. Colorado State was up by 4 so a field goal was out of the question. There was one thing that CSU couldn't do all day and that was get pressure on the quaterback. Boise lined up in shotgun with 4 WR across. The next play Al Schneider rolled out to the left to avoid the rush. With no one open he desperatly threw a ill advised throw. Ite actually was caught, just in the wrong hands of FS Mike Vinson of the Colorado State Rams. The 64 home game winning streak of the Boise State Broncos on the Blue Turf was over. Their perfect home record against conference opponents was no more. The victors were the Colorado State Rams who fired their coach 2 games into the season and have been a cinderella story since. Will the Boise State Broncos bounce back and make it to the BCS Championship game, or will they have to wait yet another year. Will the cinderella Colorado State Rams finally make it to the big ball, or will they fall? Only time will tell.

Joesph William s first game as head coach went a little differently than thought. This was his first game since taking over the helm at Western Michigan University. His squad was going against a 3-1 Bowling Green team. BGSU featured one of the top receivers in the nation in Steven Mathis, who was also leading the nation in receptions. Western was being led by JR QB Lee Holiday and one of the best offense s in the entire nation. They were fifth in the nation in total offense, fourth for passing and tenth for first for first downs. Western was ninth in turnover difference. Their defense was led by 4 players leading 6 individual categories in the whole nation. Now that is something WMU is not used to.

The game got started off by a quick drive from WMU that took only 1 minute. Their first score was a 4 yard TD pass from QB Lee Holiday to WR Erick Montgomery. Montgomery is a true freshman with freak 6 foot 4 size and very fast feet that can get him down the field quickly. Bowling Green was able to answer back with a 5 yard rushing TD from John Mason with 4 minutes and 7 seconds left in the first. The 1st quarter ended without any more scores because of great defense from both sides.

Quarter 2 started off with a very quick play, but this time on the defensive side. Only 8 seconds in Justin Carcia was able to pick up a fumble and take it 35 yard for a TD. The forced fumble was caused by RLB Sam Hamby laying a big hit on QB Paul Williamson of BGSU. Following were a couple of 3 and outs from both teams. Late in the 2nd quarter BGSU was able to score a 9 yard TD pass to tie the game back at 14-14. With only 19 seconds left many people thought Western would run it out. That wasn’t what Joe William s was thinking. He was able to drive the whole field and score a 33 yard FG as time expired in the first half. Halftime Score was WMU-17 BGSU-14. Second half recap after the break.

Coming out of the halftime break both teams aimed to do more on the defensive side of the ball. For the next 4 minutes, that was what it was all about. Both defenses were able to stop the offense and were forcing punts. On WMU s second drive of the third quarter QB Lee Holiday was hurt on a redzone sack. The following play, backup Jammal Huffman, threw his only pass of the game for a costly interception. Luckily for Western, they were able to stop BGSU before they could score. With about 3 minutes left, Clay Leonard caught a 3 yard pass from Lee Holiday to put WMU up 24-14. Bowling Green was able to answer back a couple minutes later with a 23 yard pass from Paul Williamson to his WR Joe Blalock. The following kick off was taken all the way back for 99 yards by Keith Walton. Western missed the extra point on a botched hold. The end of the third quarter ended with the WMU up 30-21.
With only one quarter remaining it looked like it was going to be a close game. It took BGSU it’s third drive of the quarter to finally put points on the board. They were able to get a 8 yard TD pass to Josh Rutledge that was also his second on the day. That put Bowling Green within 2 points closer to winning the ball game. Only they would never get any closer. WMU was able to score a 5 yard run from Dave Myers with a little less than a minute thirty left. The game ended with an odd called field goal from Western that finally gave them a win in conference play. The final score was WMU-40 BGSU-28.

This game was a good sign for things to come for newly appointed head coach Joesph Williams. WMU is now 2-4 (1-1) while BGSU falls to 3-3 (1-1) and also are which on a 3 game losing streak. The players of the game were BGSU s QB Paul Williamson (21-36,237 Yds, 3 TDs) and WMU s QB Lee Holiday (16-23, 268 Yds, 2 TDs). Stat wise BGSU and WMU were very close in most of the categories. The only stats that stood out were the special teams. This was because of WMU s Keith Walton s 99 yard kick return for a TD and WMU s ability to cover any punts and kickoffs. BGSU actually had 6 more minutes with the ball, but failed to produce any points. Next for BGSU is a home game against Toledo. Bowling Green is looking to bounce back and stay above .500. For the Western Michigan Broncos, they have to face a Northern Illinois squad out of state. WMU is looking to build on coach William s first win as a head coach. With only a 1 year contract, he is looking to prove why he should be offered an extension.

Game Notes
CSU opens their football season Tuesday after a long offseason. No one saw this one coming. CSU went 10-4 in 2011 and absolutely destroyed expectations. They lost the MWC Championship Game to a very good Hawaii. They lost to Arizona State in the Poinsettia Bowl. No one had them even having a winning record last year. CSU looks to continue their success with 2nd Year Head Coach Johnny Fudd's. They are led by Junior QB Mike Stevenson and also Junior RB Bill Odom. They lost a key player in SS/WR James Graves. He was the leading deep threat for CSU and one of the best in the nation. Jason Atkins, TE is also an impact player to look out for following his best TE award in the nation last year. Colorado State opens up against in state rival Colorado.

Mid-season report for CSU Rams

It couldn't get any worse for the Colorado State Rams. The final two contests of the 2010 campaign were as low as it can get for any college football program trying to make its way up the pecking order on the gridiron. Last November was an unmitigated disaster in Fort Collins. The Rams were outscored 93-10 in the final two contests, losing in blowout fashion to mediocre BYU and rival Wyoming in consecutive weeks.

The 2010 defense was just atrocious for a program that, in 2008, won the New Mexico Bowl and had seemingly put itself on firm footing. Surrendering nearly 35 points per game this past season, the Rams were out of most games before halftime. Jason Graves, a Second Team All-MWC performer from 2010, returned and has hoped to play at a higher level to help the Rams get defensive stands in 2011. Surprisingly, defensive coordinator Larry Kerr was retained for the upcoming campaign. Head coach Steve Fairchild had moved his defensive staff around and gone exclusively to the 3-4 scheme in hopes of getting better results. This did not turn out how he had wanted. The end result wasn't only a loss on the schedule, but a loss of a head coach after just the second game.

In stepped Johnny Fudd. John was raised in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan. After an offensive cordinator gig at Western Michigan, Johnny Fudd was given the chance to coach his own team. He was given the job of turning around a pretty bad team with many problems. His task was to take over the Colorado State Rams from the Mountain West Conference. He stepped in midseason after the second game of the season. CSU had no recent success in the last 2 years. Out came Steve Fairchild and in came Johnny.

The first game was quite a shocker for many Colorado natives. The game featured an instate rivarlry against Colorado and Colorado State. Colorado lost a tight game to much improved Hawaii squad earlier in the week. Colorado State was coming off a loss to Fresno State and a recent head coaching change. The game got ugly and it stayed ugly. Colorado State's offense showed too much power for Colorado's defense. It was a blowout apart from a 14 point 4th quater from Colorado. Jason Atkins was the star of the show with 9 catches for 102 yars as TE. The final score was 35-17. At the time it wasn't thought of too much for the CSU rams, but now it means so much more. After that lost Colorado has gone on to 4-0 since then and beat some pretty good teams you could say. The Buffulo's upset the defending Sugar Bowl champs, Ohio State Buckeyes. OSU was ranked 16 at the time. Then the Colorado Buffulos pulled a huge upset the 3rd ranked team in the country! Andrew Luck and Standford lost in a BLOWOUT to Colorado. This wasn't seen by anyone. Turns out this win by CSU is a pretty big deal. The next stop for the rams was a tough game against Nevada.

After a pretty good upset win to start off coach Fudd's carrer; next came a winless Nevada team. It was a shootout from begining to end. The teams combined to score 79 points. It was lead by Nevada's defense for most of the game. The team returned an interception AND a fumble for a touchdown. Many mistakes were made by CSU's quaterbacks. One thing that didn't help the rams was that starter Mike Stevenson was knocked out very early in the game. The game saw all 3 of the quaterbacks that the rams brought. It was a very injury fested game for CSU. Shawn Jenkins, backup QB for the rams, didn't have a game to be proud of. He threw 2 TD's but also 4 Int's to go along with it. He went 19-41 but was able to score a rushing touchdown. The game came down to the only score in the 4th quater. A goal line rushing TD by Bill Odem from CSU. It put them up by 1 point and were able to hold on. CSU improved to 3-1 on the season. One bright spot for Colorado State is a recent roster change.

James Graves has been one of the biggest bright spots for the rams. He is CSU's impact SS and now leading deep WR threat. His first game ever at WR he scored 3 TD's and had 354 yards on a team high 11 catches. Jason Atkins, the league leading recieving TE, was out of the mix for the most part of the game. He had a season low 1 catch for 14 yards. Next up was a tough test against undefeted UTEP.

UTEP had found new success by starting 5-0. With CSU's early season success, this game was gaining some good hype for once. That hype didn't last long for it was nothing but another blowout by the rising rams. Colorado State Rams started out fast, and stayed fast. They scored 38 points in the first 3 quaters of the game and ending with a season high 45. Their defense had a better outing while allowing only 24 points. Mike Stevenson for CSU had a carrer day with 349 yards passing while completing 16 time on 23 attempts. He also had a career high 5 TD passes with non going to the other team. Bill Odom had yet another big game with 140 yards with 1 TD. Jason Atkins was once again on top of the catches with 5 after a dissapointing game at Nevada. He also brought in 2 scores himself. The star though was once again James Graves. He had yet another 200 yard game. He had 4 catches that went for 234 yards with 2 TD's and bringing a NCAA long 92 yard reception with 2 ticks left in the second quarter. This was preceded on a gutsy call for a fair catch on the kick off from the UTEP TD before. The next test is against #6 ranked Boise State at their almost unbeatable Blue Turf.

This game involves to potent offenses and stingy defenses. In all fairness though, Boise State is the huge favorite with their number 1 scoring offense in the nation. Al Schneider leads Boise against impact player, on both sides of the ball, James Graves. Al has 18 TD's with only 9 INT's and throwing for 1550 yards in only 5 games. James Graves has averaged 244 yards in his 2 game at WR while also bringing in 5 TD's. Boise State has Colorado State in every statistical catagory except for rush defense. Even agains the odds, Johnny Fudd expects nothing less that a win. After this tough test, CSU's schedule is up and down from here. The game is CSU's first nationally televised games in in a very long time which take place at 12:30pm

Colorado State's schedule is really bumpy after the tough Boise State game. The next 2 games are fairly easy game against a Wyoming game and UNLV. Wyoming features the 5th worst passing defense, 12th worst total defense and the 6the worst rush offense in the whole nation. UNLV is led by the nations leading interception leader with 30 in only 6 games! After that is a tough test that could possibly determine the MWC-East champion. The game is against Houston which has the top pass offense in the nation and the 4the best scoring offense in the nation. Also they have the 2nd best total offense in the nation. It'll be a huge test against the 50th best defense. Following that is an easy game against a weak New Mexico squad. To end the season are 2 tough tests away against currently ranked opponents. The frirst wouldld be the defending Rose Bowl champions, TCU. Last would be a much improved Air Force team that's ranked for the first time in a long time. This leads into the MWC championship game that CSU hopes to be a part of.

Johnny Fudd's has stepped into a messy situation at CSU and has turned it into one of the early feel good stories of the year. Undefeted in his first 3 games and hoping to build on it. He has brought big expectations to his team and has already lived up to more than expected for the whole season while only 5 games into the season. New found star Jason Atkins at TE and SS turned WR James Graves have been the best players early in the season. James Graves is leading the nation in yards per game at 244 and 32.5 yards per catch. Jason Atkins is the leading recieving TE in the MWC by leading with 27 catches and 5 TD's. Led by a high scoring offense, and a tough, but sometimes bonehad defense, CSU is here to stay and return the good o'l glory days.
