Corvallis, Oregon – This was defiantly not how Joesph Williams wanted to start his second season as head coach for the Western Michigan Broncos. In a very hard fought battle the Oregon State Beavers came out with a 38-35 win over WMU.

The real killers for the Broncos were turnovers in the first half. Lee Holiday threw 3 early interceptions which put his team down early. In 14 games last year he only threw 5 all season so this was one of his worst showings. Besides the turnovers the Broncos could not stop the Beaver offense.

“I tried coming into the game with a different look on defense and well, it didn’t work out obviously. Next week against Michigan State we will probably go back to the defense that worked oh so well last year.” Coach Williams said on his team’s poor defensive performance.

Lee Holiday started to get in his rhythm in the second half, almost carrying his team to a huge comeback. Holiday ended the game going 24-38 for 283 yards and with 3 TD’s but 3 costly INT’s.

On the other side Jay Lewis threw for 205 yards with 2 TD’s and no INT’s. The star of the game for the Beavers was RB Ryan Hampton who had 179 yards on 27 carries and 3 rushing TD’s. He had a huge 3 and long run that sealed the game late. Western down by 21 at one point in the second half came storming back to lose by only 3.

Joesph Williams had this to say about his team’s almost comeback “Yeah we made a comeback and almost were able to tie the game, but in the end a loss is a loss and our team is here to win so it’s defiantly going to be a long practice when we get back home. We played sloppy throughout and played horrid defense. Our offense clicked early but a couple great play by Oregon’s defense stopped us cold.”

Heisman hopefull Dave Myers had a real quiet game rushing for only 44 yards on 9 carries. He did have 1 rushing TD though. TE Kevin Brown had another big game receiving catching 8 for 110 yards and 1 TD. He was 4th in the nation in receptions last year and his Lee Holiday’s favorite target so far.

This week Western Michigan goes to play a #24 Michigan State. Oregon State has a bye week. This game handed Joesph Williams his first collegiate loss as head coach. He is now 9-1.
