(DY #2) WMU finally beats the CMU after 6 long years!

Kalamazoo – They finally did it! After 5 grueling years Western Michigan was able to defeat the Central Michigan Chippewas. This game was no fluke either. It literally went down to the last minute to decide the game, and it wasn’t even over then.



Western Michigan was riding on their big season opener against Michigan top push back CMU. It had been 5 years since WMU had been able to beat the Chippewas. Bill Cubit wasn’t able to do it so they let him go and brought in Scott Simmons to finally get over the hump.



The first quarter went as well for WMU as they wanted. They were able to stop CMU on a 3 and out. When their offense hit the field they were able to drive with ease and scored a TD with 36 seconds left on a pass from Alex Carder. The second quarter didn’t have near as much fortune.


Quarter number 2 did not go well for WMU at all. Western gave up 17 points in a ugly fashion. All 3 of the TDs from CMU were 55 yard plus bombs for scores. Alex Carder also threw an ugly pick. The only bright part was a 66 yard TD bomb from Carder. The halftime score was 17-14 Central Michigan on top.





The second half didn’t start off any better for the Broncos. Alex Carder was still cold from the second quarter and misfired on his first 5 passes. Luckily for him and Western their defense finally stepped up. They didn’t allow any points in the third quarter. With about 2 minutes left the Broncos scored a 3 yard run from Tevin Drake. The beginning of the 4th quarter was 17-21 the Broncos.


Western Michigan was down for the first time entering the 4th quarter in the whole season. Now it was time to see what Scott Simmons was made of. CMU was able to score first with a 5 yard TD pass to make the score 24-21. The fourth quarter consisted of a lot of gutsy calls from WMU. Right off the bat Western converted 2 4th down attempts and gained them.


With only 2:25 left WMU was finally able to take back the lead with yet another deep pass. The final minutes were winding down for a game for the ages. WMU wasn’t able to stop CMU all quarter, and still couldn’t in crunch time. With 0:56 CMU scored a 12 yard TD pass to put them up 31-28 Central. It looked like WMU was going to lose their first game and 6th in a row against CMU unless Scott Simmons was made of miracles. Turns out he was. With only 18 seconds left on a 4th down he pulled off a 26 yard miracle pass for a TD.



After 6 long years the Western Michigan Broncos were finally able to beat the Central Michigan Chippewas. One of the reasons Scott Simmons was hired, to beat CMU. WMU improved to 3-0 on the season. CMU went to 1-2 on the season.
