Week 1 Report

The Mountaineers have made a statement in this year's Friends of Coal Bowl. Senior 2nd team All-Big 12 QB Geno Smith played well after an interception in the redzone of the 1st drive for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers were able to 2 score two consecutive TDs after moving the ball into the redzone on both drives. The defense also was able to force a turnover on which they capitalized on a short field scoring on a senior RB Shawne Alston TD. Marshall bounced back scoring a TD to make it a one possesion game. WVU's offense then went on to score a TD in the final minute of the 1st half. Marshall then got a few big plays on the ensuing drive which put them in WVU's redzone. Then on a speed option play Blake Frohnapfel's pitch was stolen in the back field by true sophomore DB Avery Williams who then took it 83 yards for a score with :16 left in the 1st half. Halfway through the 3rd quarter, Geno Smith threw a 26 yd TD to Senior WR Tavon Austin off a nicely sold play-fake which froze Marshall's secondary enough to leave Austin wide open for the TD toss. Later in the 3rd quarter, Austin caught a pass across the middle of the field for 1st down and broke his fibula. The Thundering Herd scored another TD late in the 3rd but were unable to score again the rest of the game even when Coach Holgorsen pulled his starters halfway through the 4th quarter. Mountaineer fans are happy after the win against state rival Marshall but after losing star wideout Austin for a majority of the season this rivalry win comes bittersweet. Austin will miss 10-12 weeks with the injury and this will create a need for someone to step up at WR. Whether it's Geno Smith's HS teammate junior Ivan McCartney, redshirt senior (grandson of Mountaineer legendary coach Don Neihlen) Ryan Neihlen, or true freshman Jordan Thompson who saw a lot of snaps in the slot after throughout the game in week 1, someone will need to standout to replace such a vital part of this offense. This much needed bye week in week 2 will give Dana Holgorsen enough time to make this decision.

Recruiting Report

Assistant Coach Joe DeForest was able to get a commit from 4 star ATH Brian Jones of East Norriton, Pennsylvania. Jones is 6'5" 257 lbs and is expected to play defensive line at WVU. Jones is the 1st of many commits in the 2013 Mountaineer recruiting class. DeForest couldn't add much more about the recruiting process so far except that he's got a few Maryland kids that have been showing more interest in WVU after making a few phone calls to the prospects.

This is my first Dynasty blog and after reading a few posts I felt somewhat compelled to do my own. I am starting a new dynasty with my favorite college football team the West Virginia Mountaineers. I've kept the conferences default but will make as many changes as the game will allow to the conferences that are planned over the next seasons (i.e. Boise St. & SD St. to the Big East & even more in year 2). I will also update bowl bids scheduled to change, mainly because they directly affect my conference(ex. SEC vs BIG 12 bowl scheduled to start in Jan. 2015 meaning year 3). I am using CK11's rosters (last updated 8/14/12) and Oraeon1224's sliders for the Heisman difficulty ( http://www.operationsports.com/forum...rs-ncaa13.html ). I will play similar to Dana Holgorsen's Air Raid offense emphasizing in play action passes, jet sweeps, lots of underneath routes & presnap motions. I've redshirted all the players my insiders at WVU are telling me will redshirt. I've put the right players at their positions on the depth chart & formation subs (Tavon as inside receiver). I'll be providing game by game blogposts with box scores and recruiting visits and signees to the Mountaineers and other notable news in the dynasty.

LETS GO... MOUNTAINEERS!
