I. Introduction

Since I arrived at EA in January of 2011, one thing excited me most about the future of the game; the then yet time in development test bed, FranTK. This was a tool that would allow on-the-fly changes to data, allowing the designer to test tuning virtually in real time. I thought this would be the key to redefining the sports game franchise mode, and I thought we were on our way to bringing the career experience of NFL Head Coach 09 to Madden without all the logic ... Ok, so, I'm an old dad, so I don't have the kinda time some of you youngans do to play Madden, but I love franchise mode, love team building, so I created a system that allows me to make quick progress without spending inordinate hours in front of the TV.

Another reason is a split between direct play and sim results in more realistic injuries.

Now, let me start with this; I love Play the Moments. Fantastic feature. But it skips too much. I've developed my own system ... Read More

Of all the sports around the world, the role of the coach is most critical in American Football. No other sport has so many highly specialized positions, so the coordination of those positions is an integral part of the game.

So why is it that NFL games rarely address this subject with any depth? Madden's coaches provide small attribute bonuses, while coaches in the 2K series had virtually no influence whatever. NFL Head Coach 09 took a stab at it, but that was a game wholly devoted ... Read More

I'm not sure when this got started, but I've followed the "games as art" argument for a long time. I have always found it fascinating because it was like watching squirrels fight. One attacks the others tail when he's not looking, the other leaps and runs up a tree while the aggressor hides behind another trunk, then they begin the process anew and nobody makes any progress.

Recently the following blog by Roger Ebert was pointed out to me- http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2010/04/video_games_can_never_be_art.html ... Read More

During the last major realignment, the NFL clung desperately to pointless artificial rivalries. Through the process of playing one another twice a year, teams will develop rivalries, but unless these rivalries are rooted in geography, they are only that... artificial.

The NFL made the mistake of clinging to artificial rivalries like Cowboys-Redskins during the last realignment when it is clear that a Houston-Dallas rivalry would be far better.

So here is my plan for ... Read More

Let me start by saying Franchise mode is of immense importance to me. I still play NFL Head Coach because its such a deep and engaging franchise mode despite gameplay flaws. I will probably continue to play it until Madden meets or exceeds it. That said, there are things that have to come first.

I'll go down my top ten here. These are the ten most important things that Madden has to address in the coming years. I believe firmly that the team in place can accomplish this; Real Assignment ... Read More

There was a time, circa 2000, I felt very confident- arrogant even- that I was among the most knowledgeable football gamers in the online community.

At the time MaddenMania was the dominant Madden community, and I had just joined. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying people knew nothing about football. Certainly our online community has always had above average understanding of the sport, but I don't remember there being much technical knowledge.

Today, however, I see ... Read More

I finally bit the bullet. Tired of no decent baseball game on the XBox 360, I traded it in, and I'm a PS3 man from here until the next generation.

Of course, with my shiny new (used) PS3, I also have MLB 10: The Show, and it's quite the trip down memory lane.

This game should be convicted of grand theft: baseball, and that's a wonderful thing.

Since about 2000, baseball video gaming has been in a golden era, with every year producing at least one absolute ... Read More

There are many who would argue that Madden 10 was not that much of a leap over Madden 09. To those people, I say: Shove it. Your animosity toward EA, Tiburon, or whoever else clearly has clouded your judgement. Madden 10 may not be everything we've ever wanted in a football game, but to say it wasn't a significant improvement is purposefully discounting facts.

But the question remains; will the leap from '09 to '10 be matched again this year. Unfortunately, I am forced to say probably ... Read More

Versus... I hate having to put that in there. It should be NCAA Football 10 and Madden NFL 10.

For many years, to me, they've been one and the same. Going back to the PS1 versions of the game, I was just as excited, if not more so, for NCAA as I was for Madden. At heart, I'm a college guy. I love the variety in the game, I love seeing an option team take on a spread team. I love the myriad of defensive formations. I love how colorful the game is. I love how Michigan vs. Notre Dame ... Most of us are now riding high on the hope that Madden NFL 10 will be the best Madden to date. The attention to detail in the screen shots is positively outstanding. Madden 10 Art Director Michael Young has shown he is a man with vision and talent. The little things we've seen for gameplay are all adding up to something special.

As positive as things are looking, now just over 4 months from release, we have yet, as a community, really touched on Tiburon's biggest problem over the ... Read More
