Buffalo Bulls CAP Dynasty, Chapter 1, part 5
Posted on May 28, 2009 at 09:28 AM.
Later than evening...

"Thank you for the opportunity Director Manuel. Mr. Pope and I will be there on Wednesday for the interview." Eli shut his cell phone and released a short sigh of relief. Time to prepare my sales pitch...Eli thought to himself.

Alone in his home office, he uncrossed his legs and left the reclined position he had assumed during the 30 minute conversation between himself and the Buffalo athletic director. He pulled himself back to the desk and placed the legal pad on top so that he could organize his already copious notes into one stream of thought. One lesson his father Caleb taught constantly to Eli and his twin brother, Sal Sr., is that details and information are always important. The difference between truth and reality, he would say often, isn't whether or not the details are fact. "If presented or perceived wrongly, the same set of facts can be viewed as important or propaganda."

As he always did in the process of making a major decision, he imagined what Sal Sr. and Caleb would have done. Now that he was being interviewed for a job in the old hometown, he wondered what they would do in his shoes.

Picking up the picture frame at the far right corner of his desk, the photo inside was the last picture the three of them would take together. It was immediately after Marine School of Infantry graduation, with he and Sal a slightly smaller replica of the massive Caleb, one under each of his arms. Five minutes later the federal marshals would whisk Caleb and their mother, Barbara, away once again to parts unknown. The unknown part was usually the case with federal witness protection. Usually.

Taking one last look at the now 17 year old photo, there wasn't much of a decision to make. He was going to Buffalo if he was offered the job. Now was a good time, with Sal Jr. graduating early and Christmas break coming up.

Grabbing his Blackberry, he typed in *3, pulling up the familiar Gwinnett County, GA area code. Hitting the send button, he knew his Paw Paw wouldn't be crazy about his phone ringing at 9:30pm, but he was a Baptist pastor and being on call was part of the job description. His Mom answered.

"Mom, it's Eli, you got a minute?"
