FBI source: Mob involved in a conspiracy to commit sports bribery. Indictment filed in U.S. District Court.
By Paul Sitzer
ESPN.com
In a case that is sure to rock the foundation of college football, an un-named source within the FBI has stated federal indictments are to be issued against several current and former players at an NCAA FCS institution. "It's not a prominent one, but this particular football program was targeted by certain elements of organized crime that reason.", the source said. "Indictments are filed and arrests are already underway. The details of the investigation will not be released until we speak to the institution in question, as they are placed in a delicate situation through no fault of their own. They will need an opportunity to prepare themselves for public reaction."
The possible 39-count indictment charges that between July 2005 and August 2007, lower ranking members of an organized crime syndicate gave money and other things of value to the athletes in order to influence, or attempt to influence, the final score of several football games during the 2005-2007 season. Though the money paid to players was not substantial, this is believed to be the first major gambling case involving an NCAA football team since the 1997 Boston College gambling scandal.
