ZFarls wants to talk about pounding the magic bean today in Madden 11!
So MB Nation, NCAA 11 comes out and I literally find the best run in the game the first time I played.
Naturally, Madden doesn’t have the exact same play or success when running it. So I crutch back to passing the ball and only running in obvious situations. Mostly out of goal-line without a good quick passing option.
When are you running the ball, does your opponent know? Either by game situation or by formation?
I was struggling late in games due to using most of my good passing plays early. Running can really stretch a game out and I lacked the ability to posses the rock.
So I went back to the drawing board…
I looked for a formation which gave me more passing flexibility. Not much, but just the ability to leak it out to a FB or make a defense who stacks the line pay.
Next, I made sure it had a nice off tackle style run. One that allows you to cut it outside or just kick it up the gut for a few tough yards.
Then, I played a guy who GASHED me with a counter run, so I went to see what was so effective and learned about a run in MY PB that had the same effect. I now had off tackle and counter so I can run both directions quite quickly. Lastly, I came out in a play that allows me to use the off tackle, counter and quick pass. This play happened to be a toss run outside, so I know had run right, run left, run middle covered and can change quickly based on defensive look.
I ALWAYS COME OUT IN THIS TOSS PLAY. I dont care if you don’t plan on running it. If you come out in the counter, and don’t want to counter, there is no way to get to the toss. It was a hard habit to break, but if you ever had the chance to bust a toss and can’t get to it, it will stick with you!
Now, I COMMIT to running the ball, 2nd and 11 is a passing situation for most, but I will run because I must make the defense respect it.
The most common thing in Madden is that once a player abandons the run, they NEVER go back to it. Especially if they lose the lead and are having decent passing success. This allows the defense to sit back on defense and never even worry about the run.
Even at gamestop, I got locked up early, but I stayed persistent and broke a few big gains. Do you know how annoying it is to have to stop the run every play or even just think that it might be coming. Too many players would have abandoned it but with my 3 pronged attack, I knew something good would come!
Do you have a running strategy? Are you too quick to abandon the run game?
