PRESEASON WEEK 2
Monday Press Conference
Coach Shanahan: I wanna thank everyone for coming. It was a tough game last week, never feels good to come away with a loss like that, no matter what time of year it is. We will have to practice extra hard this week to correct the problems from our last game, that is for sure.
First order of business, I had to cut 4 more young men from this football team today. For me, this is the hardest part of the season, because all these guys put everything they have out there. If you watched the game this weekend we obviously did not play defense very well. Our tackling in particular was sub par throughout, and I think you will see that evident in who is not here any longer.
MLB H. Blades
MLB R. Henson
CB B. Westbrook
SS C. Horton
Moving on, we have the Colts on the schedule this week, so it won't get any easier, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Going in to practice this week I don't see much changing, except I do plan on rotating John Beck and Tim Hightower in to the first team slots this week to try and spark the offense. Rex and Ryan will come in with the second team, everything else will be the same. This is a huge week for these guys as I have to let go of 8 more players next monday, so I expect this to be the best week of practice we have had. Thanks for coming everyone, hopefully I am standing here after a win next week.

PRESEASON GAME 1
STEELERS @ REDSKINS
Rex Grossman got the start at quarterback to begin the wide open competition for the Redskins job. He would play the first quarter, completing 4 of 5 passes for 59 yards. John Beck came in to relieve him in the second, and newly acquired Nate Davis played the entire second half. All 3 quarterbacks put up decent numbers and no one really separated themselves.
As for the rest of the game, the Redskins first team defense put up a good fight, only allowing 7 points, and sacking Big Ben twice in the first quarter. The second and third team defense, however, did not fair as well, giving up 31 points over the final 3 quarters, constantly missing assignments and not finishing tackles.
The most worrisome thing to come out of this game is Washington's running game. None of our running backs could get anything going. We finished the game with 41 yards rushing on the night. That has to improve or it will be a long season.
FINAL SCORE: PIT 38 WAS 14
After sacking Big Ben on the first play of the game, Mendenhall get it all back...and more.
Brian Orakpo comes unblocked off the edge to sack Big Ben in the First Quarter.
Down 7-0 early, Laron Landry and rookie Ryan Kerrigan team up for a huge play.
Quarterback John Beck ties the game at 7 early in the 2nd.
Nate Davis and Brandon Banks add a little more respectability to the scoreboard with under 30 seconds left.
One game in the books, another one coming up next week on the road against the Colts. Before then, though, more cuts need to be made, as we continue to retool this roster. Who will be the unlucky players? Stay tuned....

The Washington Redskins have signed two players prior to their game against the Steelers.
Runningback Tiki Barber has signed a 1 year deal worth $850K
Quarterback Nate Davis has agreed to a 1 year deal worth $460K
Lets hear the thoughts of the GM of the Redskins on these moves, as well as hear a little from each player.
GM: I said earlier in the week I felt we needed more depth at our offensive skill positions, and that is what I am trying to add here. I am not expecting big things right away, of course, but if these guys can come in and add depth, as well as make the guys we have better through practice and competition, it can only help us.
Tiki Barber: I have been waiting patiently for my shot and I finally got it. I have been resting my body and I know I can come in fresh and help this running game tremendously. Not to mention I get to play the Giants twice (smirks).
Nate Davis: I'm excited to go to work. As far as I'm concerned I believe the quarterback competition is wide open. I haven't talked to the coaches yet, but I am confident in my self, and I know I can win this job if I am given the chance, I just can't wait to get out there.
GM: To make room for Tiki and Nate we unfortunately had to release a few guys who we know are good players. I hate to see them go and I wish them the best in their future endeavors.
Redskins Cuts
QB M. Gutierrez
TE L. Paulson
DE D. Worthington
The Steelers are looming as practice continues. Quarterback Rex Grossman gets the start against the feared defense. How will he and the rest of the team do against a team that is coming off a disappointing loss in the Super Bowl? Stay tuned....

I need to make 4 mandatory cuts before the first preseason game against Pittsburgh. These are fairly easy cuts as 3 are offensive lineman with D potential, and the last is a tight end with D potential. he unlucky players are:
TE D. Schouman
G S. Capers
G X. Fulton
C N. Sundburg
After I say goodbyes to the young men leaving my team, it is time to hit the practice field to see exactly what I have to work with before I decide if I want to add some more competition via free agency, as well as help me develop a game plan.
After spending some time with both the offense and the defense, I came to the conclusion that I was comfortable in what we had to work with on defense. Players were making plays and staying true to their assignments, even when I put the young guys out there I liked what I say. The offense, though, is a completely different story. The quarterbacks could not find the receivers, and the running backs could not seem to hit the holes fast enough. This prompted me to look in free agency to add a player or two to ignite the offense. The search should not last too long, so stay tuned for updates...
