Division 1 Football: Let the Bidding Begin
Posted on January 15, 2014 at 01:06 PM.
It seems this argument is as old as time as itself. At least it seems the discussion surrounding the topic is. Pay for play in College Football. These next few years (including this offseason)could play a pivotal role in not only the middle layer to the sport of football but the entire sport itself. The decisions made could completely change how athletes go from high school to (maybe) college and then to their NFL careers. It all depends on the pay for play argument.

Imagine pay for play is voted in after the model of stipends is implemented because lets face it, one thing leads to another. If we think that this train is going to stop at just measly stipends a week for some food and movie tickets then we are surely oblivious. Once big bidders get involved, notice I said bidders and not boosters, this will become that runaway train I mentioned. The colleges begin to pay the players as much as they can so they can get the best players the nation has to offer. Bye bye recruiting coordinators. Hello check writers. Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher won't be sitting down with the mother to talk football. Oh no. It'll be about how many zeroes can we get on that check coach. This dynamic doesn't even include the idea of skipping college or even lowering the requirement to go to the NFl.

The idea of skipping college and going straight into professional sports is a topic just as heavily discussed. The idea was just recently changed in the past 10 years used by the NBA. Just ask Kobe, Dwight, Kevin, and yes, of course LeBron. Now those athletes would have had to go to college for a year. Can you see LeBron suiting up for the Tar Heels taking on Coach K? Yeah, me either. Now imagine that but with football. Instead of players like Clowney and Winston going to college they would just go straight to the NFL and learn just as players have done in the NBA. This would be detrimental to the college game because you are taking away huge players and personalities. This effects teams which in turn effects the money that could be generated from the players for the the colleges. There is a reason the best schools are the only ones pulling above the profit line and those only include about 20.

In essence, college football is at its peak right now and can only get better hopefully with the new playoff format. Well, if money doesn't take over. I put my money on Texas, Alabama, USC, and the big dogs if that happens. And I would say goodbye to teams like Baylor, UCF, Boise State, and others. Here's to hoping college football keeps the college before football.
