Draft Day 2014

The Draft:

* Note that we made some moves prior to the draft that involved picks, as a result we have a high 1st rounder, then move to the 5th round.

Round 1 (Pick 4) - QB Ramzee White
Round 5 (Pick 132) - LT J.Taite
Round 5 (Pick 143) - TE C.Lopez
Round 5 (Pick 150) - LOLB T.Browning
Round 5 (Pick 154) - RE B.Walker
Round 6 (Pick 182) - FB B.Pearson
Round 7 (Pick 218) - LE E.Edwards

Our Draft Grade this year was again a "C". Best choice was deemed QB White and our Best value was said to be LT Taite in the 5th round.
Texans were again, but the only, team able to draft rated "A+"!

Rookie Signings:

* NOTE: Again this year (and going forward), I will abide by the current CBA outline (as I previously mentioned in this dynasty blog) of:
First half of first round - at most 6 years
Second half of first round - at most 5 years
After round one - no more than 4 years
Rookie contracts not to be renegotiated in first two years

* This IS more of a CAP challenge as players spent a shorter amount of time in their first, and usually lower, contracts!

* And this year I have include the draft picks "OVR" number and "Potential" (learned after signing their contracts of course).

QB Ramzee White - 6-years/68-million 78 C
LT J.Taite - 4-years/1.88-million 85 A
TE C.Lopez - 4-years/1.32-million 75 B
LOLB T.Browning - 4-years/1.32-million 71 B
RE B.Walker - 4-years/1.88-million 85 A
FB B.Pearson - 4-years/1.32-million 66 A
LE E.Edwards - 4-years/1.32-million 72 C

I was a little disappointed in the 1st round overall and potential stats, but I do think we have found some true winners in LT Taite (who I see starting this coming season at that position) and also RE Walker (who will soon be starting I'm sure). Unfortunately he'll be playing behind the newly re-signed RE Dorsey and they both have 4-year contracts.

After all the moves and the signing of draft picks, I think we have a solid squad again for the coming season. But, as seems to happen with a veteran, contending team, we have again maximized our CAP and sit with 550k (1.95mil penalties).

We'll have to be very careful about the moves we make this year, if any, to stay under the cap and still improve our team, without being penalized too much further with money that will go against the next year CAP.

Im loving this dynasty. What made u want to trade up to get Ramzee White? Other than him your draft was amazing. Good luck this season.

Hey tbasket20!

If you read the dynasty post just prior to the one about, you'll see a huge confession about an error I made in trading for a better 1st round pick PRIOR TO the actual draft.

It was LT TAITE that showed within the top 6-7 spots in "scouting" as the year ended. The guy had great scouting stats and I had a hole because of veteran LT Waters (37yrs old) demanding long-term and a ton of cash to stay. HE was the one that I was drooling over...

So, I picked teams with a high draft pick and tried to trade to move up. Did that. But THEN when the draft started I couldn't find TAITE until projected 5TH ROUND! Gasp!!!!

White happened to be about the best pick available at the time. I have Cassel going into his last year and W.Jackson is not yet proven, so I thought a little competition might be in order?!?! We'll see how it works out. The guy wanted a TON to sign of course, so he better pay off. Certainly has SPEED!

But quickly my "next" issue was whether I would even get TAITE now, because I had the 1st round pick, then had to wait until the 5TH ROUND. Luckily, not everyone had the same scouts out I did apparently. I have started him at LT this season and hope he pays off a progresses into the 90's quickly. Just need someone for the other side now...

But, to answer your question...total FAIL on my part trading the picks the way I did. Next time I will SOOO wait until the draft starts and then if I spot something I want or need in the top several picks, I'll make trades up or down.

Thanks for following along!

yeah i read it but i meant to ask why didnt u trade down after you found that out?

Good question. Hadn't thought of that...
Partially shock at my miscue...and partially having such a high pick for the first time in several years, so I though I might use it!

See...learned some thing ELSE.
Thanks for that!

Another thing that was sitting in the back of my head was the fact that I knew I would be right up against the CAP again and felt that just the one higher pick and then a bunch of lower rounds might be easier to finance than a 1-2-3-etc... that might demand more cash.

I think I'll have that problem consistently now.....just have to manage the cash each off-season and make smarter trades that won't penalize me as much.
