The Return of The Chiefs - Franchise Year 3 (2011)
Posted on June 13, 2010 at 10:03 PM.
Regular Season:
Week 1 - KC @ NY Jets - WIN 17-14
* Building on the pre-season, we had a great opener in the east. ROLB Hali was Player of the Game and our second round draft pick WR S.Johnson had a kick-off return for a touchdown! Everybody looked good, on and off the field. Homecoming should be fun!

Week 2 - Chargers @ KC - WIN 24-17
* The first home game of 2011 was against arch-rivals the Chargers and the team responded. HB Charles was Player of the Game in this one with over 120 yards on the ground. A 2-0 start has everyone feeling very positive. The players are thrilled to finally see some hard work pay off and the fans and media have quite possibly turned the corner on our vision for the future.

Week 3 - Bye Week

"The Trade":
With the bye week came some time to look at where we are (which is in good shape) and where we really want to be, but most importantly missing pieces we could add to take us to another level quickly.

The answer came by scanning our depth chart and poking and prodding at any visible holes. What stood out were a couple of things.

We were carrying six DT's, one of which was actually a SS, but listed as a DT at the moment, along with a couple of extra CB's in what was a very deep CB core with Flowers, Cason, Dyles R and Keys R, all A potential players.

And because I actually had a CB Carr playing FS at the moment, simply because his stats were better suited than FS Page, the only sub 80 overall score on the defense was at ROLB. Even though we had just re-signed ROLB Hali to a new deal, I sniffed around to see what was out there, made a few calls and proposed a couple of different ideas so that we might look to improve, given our great start, and advance the plan a bit.

After evaluating the top players at the ROLB position, one name seemed a little more within possibility than others. So, offering our 1st Round Pick, CB Washington and DT Herron, I was able to secure ROLB Merriman and 3rd Round Pick from the Chargers. Even though it was trading within our division for a top pick in the next draft, I consider this a huge move for the team. We traded depth and a 1st round pick that likely would have maxxed my cap (after picking three in the last two years) for a proven performer that would contribute as soon as he put on the uniform!

Also moved, ROLB White and 6th Round Pick to the Giants for backup C Anthony.

Week 4 - Broncos @ KC - WIN 31-14
* Two victories over rivals in a row. The Chiefs start 3-0 and already show their dominance, we hope, within the AFC West. Things are all good! CB Flowers is the AFC Player of the Week, QB Cassel had a rating of 106.8 in the game and once again HB Charles was great on the ground with 142 yards. I credit not only his running, but the upgrades we've made on the right side of the O-Line and the play of C Harris with a lot of our early success on the ground. These guys worked hard in training camp.
By the way, new addition ROLB Merriman had most tackles in the game, making more than an immediate impact with The Chiefs!

Week 5 - KC @ Chargers - Lose 14-9
* The first chance for the roster players from both teams involved in our recent trade to get together didn't quite pan out as I had hoped. A game featuring nothing but FG's and a Safety is no where close to what I thought was in story as the rivalry continued. We simply couldn't get on track. And, by the way, CB Washington, who was sixth deep at CB for us, played probably his best game ever today! Typical.

Trade Deadline:
Extended contracts of LG Waters and also WR Wade, for a second time, two years in each case.

We moved RE Magee, in his last year of contract, to the Rams for 4th Round Pick and LE McGee, who will be stricly backup on the defensive depth chart.

Almost caught up to where I actually am in the Chiefs 2011 season. More to come...
Enjoy!
