The Return of The Chiefs
Posted on June 12, 2010 at 11:43 AM.
After a rough pre-season, the team is being worked hard, both in terms of their shape and their character. It will take a lot to turn both corners and develop a whole new winning attitude.

This first year in Coach Haley's reign will be one of assessing and making moves, therefore I'll concentrate more on the front office moves than the actual games until we have something to work with that will be worth trumpeting.

Regular Season (Weeks 1-5):
KC @ Ravens - Lose 49-19
* A spanking

Raiders @ KC - WIN 34-31
* The Raiders may keep us company in the cellar this season, so it's vital that we keep well ahead of any progress they make as both teams seem to re-build together. This was a huge morale booster!

KC @ Eagles - WIN 32-16
* The team is suddenly 2-1 and the hard work seems to be paying off. While it would be easy to get carried away, part of the re-building process is to soberly evaluate where you are and where you need to go. Two big victories are fantastic and feel good, but Coach Haley tries to keep things in perspective and encourage the squad to build on this early success.

NY Giants @ KC - Lose 35-21
* Clearly the Giants are a good barometer. They were able to win, but not without some character play from a Chiefs team that is learning to compete again!

Cowboys @ KC - Lose 34-28 (ot)
* A great game for the hometown faithful, not only because the Cowboys are in town and always attract intrest, but because the Chiefs did a great good of staying step for step with them, pushing the game to OT and then just coming up a bit short. The people are starting to believe along with the team.

Trade Deadline:
I've been working the phones to see what can be done to help to maximize the assests the Chiefs have presently and turn that into some regrowth opportunities.
Vrabel LB to Falcons for Mughelli FB (88 ovr) and Adkins LB and Falcons 2nd Round Draft Pick.
I see this trade as moving a player that, at age 34, would certainly not be able to win in the short term with the Chiefs. Instead we receive a talented RB and upgrade at that poisition and also a second round pick in the draft to be used to sign young talent.
Chambers WR, Goff RG and Niswanger C to Chargers, a rival in the AFC West, for Tucker LOLB, Green RG and Norman C. The key to this trade, in my mind, was obtaining Tucker and LOLB. This will add defence and we lose players in their last years, two on the offensive line, which we fully intend to draft to rebuild in the off-season.
That's it for the block-busters and multi-player deals.

The Chiefs also decided to extend the contracts of Wade WR for another 3yrs/8million dollars and Cox FB, in a backup role for the next 3yrs/2.62million dollars. At the same time, we released Castille FB simply because of the abundance at that position on the depth chart.

Regular Season (Week 6):
KC @ Redskins - Lose 18-14
* Needless to say, after all the moves we made at the deadline, the fact we then came out and lost to the Skins was not well-received at all. There's nothing like a few trades, followed by a loss, to start a rumbling in the faithful. But while the fans are a bit upset, the players are focused.

After week 6 we sit at 2-4 for the year. On the upside, we have already equalled our winning output of last year, but two wins is simply not enough.

Time to check in with the scouts and review what the first six weeks have turned up in prospects and adjust to evaluate a different set of players through the rest of the season.

More to come...
