So last week didn't quite work out the way us Michigan fans wanted it to. So now it seems that much more of our schedule is in doubt (Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State). So now everyone is saying that Iowa is easily going to defeat Michigan this Saturday night, and improve their overall record to 6-0. But is there that chance that an upset can indeed happen?
Michigan looked good against Western Michigan...well, until the second half. They played okay against Notre Dame, and pulled out the upset of the then #18 ranked team in America. They also beat Eastern Michigan, and then Indiana (again, that one wasn't that pretty). And then of course, last Saturday, in Michigan's first away game, they were defeated by Michigan State, although Michigan looked to have the fight in them, but an interception in overtime ended their chances.
I'll admit, Iowa looks impressive. I'll admit, they are ranked 12th. But when we really look into it...Iowa hasn't looked that great either. They are undefeated, but seemed to barely squeak out a victory over Northern Iowa and Arkansas State. Of course what everyone remembers, is Iowa's upset of then #5 Penn State. But upsets...they can happen at any time.
That's why I still think that this game could most definitely be up in the air. Michigan's offense has looked good at times, and pretty bad at other times. But if they come out playing well against Iowa, expect Iowa's streak of nine straight quarters without a touchdown history. Michigan definitely has the weapons. They've got Tate Forcier. They've got Carlos Brown (although I've heard he may not play with an injury), and they have a couple of good wide receivers, like Greg Mathews and Junior Hemingway.
Of course Iowa has their own weapons of mass destruction as well (I think weapons of mass destruction sounds cooler than saying "weapon" again...). And all of us Michigan fans can admit, Michigan's defense hasn't looked good, at all. In fact, I think I've seen some high school teams with better defenses than our's.
But like I've said...and like everyone knows...upsets can happen at anytime. Just ask USC (yeah, they would have never thought Washington could have beat them), or hey, we can get too close for comfort and talk to Michigan (yeah, I still have to relive Appalachian State at least once a month). So what are the odds of Iowa defeating Michigan? Probably pretty good, honestly. But can Michigan pull the upset? I'd have to say, oh yeah they could.
