Red Raiders Overcome Early Deficit To Beat
Mustangs in 42-41 Shootout
Mustangs in 42-41 Shootout
The SMU Mustangs went to the air early and often and took advantage of a young and vulnerable Texas Tech secondary. Mustang QB Conner Preston set a school record for passing yards with an impressive 529 yards tallied, most of it in the first half to stand out WR Der'rikk Thompson. The Red Raider offense struggled early, but play well enough to prevent a total blowout from taking shape.
The Mustangs took a 35-21 lead into the half, but the Texas Tech defense started to find it's footing and was able to hold SMU to two Field Goals for the rest of the game. The offense did it's part as well, scoring early in the the second half and then mounting an great drive late in the third quarter that almost fell apart on the goal line when starting QB Davis Webb had to leave the field due to an apparent injury to his non-throwing arm. Patrick Mahomes, a true Freshman playing in his first college game, filled in and finished the drive with a short TD pass to bring the Red Raiders to within one score entering the final quarter.
Trailing by 6 points midway through the 4th quarter, the Red Raiders would see yet another impressive drive potentially stall as second key injury struck at a bad time. This time it was HB Kenny Williams that went down with a shoulder injury. Backup HB DeAndre Washington filled in admirably in reserve, chewing clock and gaining yards. Needing a breather after leading the team down the field, Washington would watch 3rd string HB Quinton White take a goal line hand-off, break a tackle in the backfield, and charge into the end zone for the go ahead score.
White (37) puts Texas Tech on top late in the game.
Needing to come up with one last crucial stop, the Red Raider defense forced the Mustangs' fourth turnover of the game. CB Josh Keys came down with a tough sideline catch to pull in his second Interception of the game. With Webb and Williams still sidelined, Mahomes and Washington would prove themselves up to the task, pick up the first downs needed to drain the clock and escape Dallas with a close victory.
Thompson (7) had a big game, but Keys (24) would
make the big play at the critical moment.

A new year brings a new Head Coach as Will Radie takes over for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With just a short time until the kickoff to the 2014-15 College Football season, the Red Raiders have released their official roster. The Red Raiders have seen an influx of young talent ready to learn from veteran Seniors like Kenny Williams and Jordan Davis. Sophomore QB Davis Webb will will get a chance to be the lone starter after splitting time last season with Baker Mayfield, who transferred to Oklahoma in the off-season.While the offense looks set, Coach Radie has not announced what Defensive scheme he plans to use. "I need to dig a bit deeper into a few more practices before deciding what kind of defensive front we will be using". The new head coach warned that his indecision should not be something to worry about, "We have a few guys that can do some different things and I just want to be sure that we are putting the best set of guys on the field," he said.
The Red Raiders open the season against the SMU Mustangs.
The full roster is below.
Davis Webb (7) and Kenny Williams (34) will look to guide the Red Raider offense..
Whether utilizing a 3-4 or a 4-3 Defense, Jackson Richards (43) and
Brandon Jackson (9) will be key components to stopping the opposition..

Will The 3-4 Defense Work in South Bend?
Ian Williams will be tasked with plugging the middle.
Along with a new offense, the Irish will be displaying a new look on the other side of the ball as well. Returning to a 3-4 front after a brief stint with the 4-3 in 2009, the defense will look to rely on the speed on the secondary and linebackers. Anchoring the defensive line will be Ian Williams (Sr.) as the lone defensive tackle on the line. Williams has played in every game of his Notre Dame career.
Johnson will move to the outside in the new defensive plan.
The new scheme will see Defensive Tackle Ethan Johnson (Jr.) shift over to Defensive End and push Kerry Neal (Sr.) back into the line backing corps. Both highly athletic, Johnson and Neal are expected to line up at several positions on the defensive front. "You never know where Coach is going to put us." said Johnson, "That's something else the offense is going to have to think about".
Te'o is as smart and talented as they come. The Irish need a big year from the Sophomore.
At line backer, the Irish have both old and new. Brian Smith (Sr.) is ready to make an impact in his final year on campus, while standout Manti Te'o (So.) will look to solidify his spot in the national spotlight. Much is expected of Te'o. "I know I am young, but no one is more determined to get Notre Dame back to hard hitting football then me" said Te'o when asked about his youth and inexperience.
Gray is just one of several speedy defensive backs the Irish will use.
Speed is the key for the Notre Dame secondary. Cornerbacks Gary Gray (Jr.) and Robert Blanton (Jr.) will lead a deep field of zippy Defensive Backs. Dan McCarthy (So.) has shown considerable growth and will back up Harrison Smith (Sr.) at Stong Safety as well as Jamoris Slaughter at Free Safety.
What the Notre Dame defense lacks in experience, it more then makes up for in potential. A relatively soft schedule will help to give this young team some time to find it's identity before it faces some solid challenges in some of the Rival games on the schedule.
You don't expect Notre Dame to have one of the best defense in the nation, but it would hardly be surprising to most experts.

What Can We Realistically Expect From The Irish?
Crist will have plenty of opportunities to show his talents.
There are a lot of questions surrounding the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Starting at the top.. Will Dayne Crist (Jr) be able to fill the sizable shoes left by departing quaterback Jimmy Clausen? Can Crist learn the spread offense that first year head coach Will Radie has brought with him to South Bend? Crist seems confident he can answer those questions as he steps into one of the brightest spotlights in football.. Notre Dame starting quaterback.
Floyd is an All American reciever with great playmaking ability.
"The goal is to take is slow, keep it simple and let the plays come to you" said Crist, when asked about the new system. "We have solid recievers who will be able to find some space downfield" referring to All American Michael Floyd (Jr.) & Duval Kamara (Sr.). "It's my job to get the ball to them and let them do what they do".
Rudolph might just be the best TE in the nation.
Crist wil also have a big target when he looks over the middle in Kyle Rudolph (Jr.) Rudolph is possibly the best ranked tight end in college football and is on the verge of a breakout season. "I think I have the ability to really help this team" said Rudolph, one of the toughest guys on this years squad. "The harder we play, the better we'll be".
Allen will be running behind some new faces.
It should be especially interesting when the Irish keep the ball on the ground. Armando Allen (Sr.) returns as the leading rusher, but he will have to do so with a new offensive line that has some large holes to fill. Allen will need to find a place in this pass oriented gameplan.
Despite all the uncertainties surrounding the team, Coach Radie summed up the outlook as best as possible when asked what to expect from the Fighting Irish this year...
"It's Notre Dame" he said, pausing momentarily "...we expect to win".
