Red Raiders Overcome Early Deficit To Beat
Mustangs in 42-41 Shootout
Mustangs in 42-41 Shootout
The SMU Mustangs went to the air early and often and took advantage of a young and vulnerable Texas Tech secondary. Mustang QB Conner Preston set a school record for passing yards with an impressive 529 yards tallied, most of it in the first half to stand out WR Der'rikk Thompson. The Red Raider offense struggled early, but play well enough to prevent a total blowout from taking shape.
The Mustangs took a 35-21 lead into the half, but the Texas Tech defense started to find it's footing and was able to hold SMU to two Field Goals for the rest of the game. The offense did it's part as well, scoring early in the the second half and then mounting an great drive late in the third quarter that almost fell apart on the goal line when starting QB Davis Webb had to leave the field due to an apparent injury to his non-throwing arm. Patrick Mahomes, a true Freshman playing in his first college game, filled in and finished the drive with a short TD pass to bring the Red Raiders to within one score entering the final quarter.
Trailing by 6 points midway through the 4th quarter, the Red Raiders would see yet another impressive drive potentially stall as second key injury struck at a bad time. This time it was HB Kenny Williams that went down with a shoulder injury. Backup HB DeAndre Washington filled in admirably in reserve, chewing clock and gaining yards. Needing a breather after leading the team down the field, Washington would watch 3rd string HB Quinton White take a goal line hand-off, break a tackle in the backfield, and charge into the end zone for the go ahead score.
White (37) puts Texas Tech on top late in the game.
Needing to come up with one last crucial stop, the Red Raider defense forced the Mustangs' fourth turnover of the game. CB Josh Keys came down with a tough sideline catch to pull in his second Interception of the game. With Webb and Williams still sidelined, Mahomes and Washington would prove themselves up to the task, pick up the first downs needed to drain the clock and escape Dallas with a close victory.
Thompson (7) had a big game, but Keys (24) would
make the big play at the critical moment.
