Lawrence, Kansas -- The Kansas team showed again on Saturday that they are not at all similar to the team of 2012 as they ran Louisiana Tech out of the building, 44-7. The first quarter ended with the score tied 7-7 after both teams scored on their opening possession, but the Kansas defense would stiffen up, giving up no further points and only 136 yards of total offense over the course of the remaining 3 quarters. As well, the offensive unit continued their hot start to the season, gaining 450 yards of total offense, with 240 of those yards coming through the ground game.
After the game, coach Gruden said "overall it was a really good performance. Both units were clicking from the start of the game and we were able to execute our game plan very well. We weren't perfect, and we'll need to continue to get better if we hope to compete in the Big 12 this year. We'll need to get back to practice and button up some little things, but these kids are playing well right now and I believe they'll continue that as conference play begins."
Once again the star of the game was James Sims, who ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries while adding 26 yards and two more touchdowns receiving. Sims wasn't the only one putting up stats today, as quarterback Jake Heaps completed 18 of 26 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns.

While the offense was putting up the flashy numbers, the defensive unit quietly only gave up 213 yards of total offense and 7 points. Over the course of the last two games, the defense for Kansas has given up only a combined 433 yards of total offense and 14 points.
"After they scored on that first drive we really picked up the pace and just flew to the ball. Everybody got in on the tackling and the team chemistry was just phenomenal today," said Junior linebacker and defensive captain, Ben Heeney.
As well, the defense got their first two turnovers of the year, intercepting Louisiana Tech quarterback, Scotty Young, on two separate occasions.[/size]
