Defense Holds their Ground; Kansas Wins in Blowout versus Rice
Kansas - 51 Rice - 7
James Sims had an amazing day; running for 187 yards and 2 TDs
Lawrence, Kansas -- After the close game against South Dakota last week, many experts were picking Rice to potentially take down Kansas this week, but the Jayhawks proved early that last week will not be the game that defines their season.
"I thought the guys played much better this week, especially on the defensive side of the ball," were Gruden's comments following the conclusion of the Jayhawks victory, "last week I think our guys were playing more to not make mistakes rather than trying to make plays. We tried to correct that all week in practice and I believe the results showed on the field."
The defensive front 7 were the stars of the game. Taylor McHargue, the Rice quarterback, was sacked 5 times on the day, with 4 of those coming from defensive linemen Marquel Combs and Jordan Tavai; who each had 2 sacks. Ben Heeney made his presence known with 5 tackles, 2 of which were for losses.
While the defense was very impressive, the offense was also firing on all cylinders; scoring 51 points on a team that only gave up 28 points to Texas A&M in Week 1.

McCay added another TD reception to the season by way of a 40 yard pass from Heaps
The offense was able to confuse and dominate the Rice defense from the start of the game, totaling 515 yards of offense at the end of the day. What was a surprise was that of those 515 yards, 342 came on the ground. The star on offense was none other than offensive captain, James Sims. Sims put together 187 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on only 14 carries.
"Between my offensive line opening up holes and the triple option working so well there was really no excuse for me to not have a big day. I just ran through the holes that opened up and did my best to make a man or two miss," said Sims on his amazing performance.
Although he didn't have the best of days through the air, quarterback Jake Heaps played very well. He was able to execute the triple option perfectly in only his second game in the system, which allowed for the running game to be almost unstoppable.
"I'm not a stats guy, I'm just here to do anything I can to win. Selfish football was one of the reasons we were 1-11 last year, and for us to improve we have to be willing to do anything to win," said Heaps.

With the game securely in-hand halfway through the third, many back-ups got playing time, including third-string tailback, Taylor Cox
Kansas will host Louisiana Tech next week in their final game before conference play begins.
