Offense Shines, Defense Disappoints in Season Opening Win for Kansas

Kansas - 48 South Dakota - 31

Sims dives into the endzone on an electrifying 21 yard TD run

Lawrence, Kansas -- After the bye in Week 1 many fans of the Jayhawks were expecting an easy win in the season opener against South Dakota; however, what they got was anything but easy. From the start of the game the offense was clicking, but the defense failed to get the memo as they allowed South Dakota to put up 31 points and 413 yards of total offense.

"We need to understand that we can't play that way and expect to win," said Gruden during his post game press conference, "we simply weren't able to stop them through the air or on the ground. They're touchdown percentage in the redzone and third down efficiency were way too high. We'll need to go back and start to get better in a lot of areas for next week's game."

The defensive MVP for the game was outside linebacker Marcus Jenkins-Moore, who was able to record 5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Despite many opportunities, the defensive secondary failed to record a single turnover while allowing South Dakota QB Richard Mathis to throw for 318 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The defense allowed 413 yards of offense by South Dakota, including this 16 yard TD run by tailback Corey Washington

"We were awful today, no doubt about it. We're going to go back to practice this week and double the effort we've been putting in because that wasn't Kansas football," were the comments of Junior defensive captain, Ben Heeney, following the game.

Despite a poor defensive showing, the offense was clicking for most of the day. After scoring only 3 points in the first quarter, the unit was able to put up 48 points by the end of the game. As well, the team mustered 463 yards of total offense, with 310 of those yards coming by way of the arm of quarterback Jake Heaps.

"I just went out there and played. There were a lot of yards after the catch and my guys made me look good today. Having a balanced run game also opened up the play action all day," said Heaps following his performance. Heaps was named the MVP of the game.

Junior wide receiver, Justin McCay, came up big with 5 receptions for 98 yards and a TD

Now that the Kansas team has been tested early, the hope is that they will be able to perform better in their week three matchup against Rice on the road.
