Offense Slows Down, but Defense Doesn't
Kansas 27 - TCU 3
Defensive back Cassius Sendish picks off a pass from Pachall
Lawrence, Kansas -- The high-powered offensive unit of Kansas only managed to put up 27 points this week against TCU, but the defense continued its string of amazing performances as TCU was only able to gain 221 yards of offense and score 3 points. As well, the Kansas D was able to stop TCU from scoring a point on two of its three redzone trips.
"We played collectively as a unit this week, and I think that this game has only given us more confidence as we enter next week's game against Oklahoma," said linebacker Darius Willis, who led the team with 8 tackles, 5 of which were for a loss.
"Since the first week, the defensive secondary has been finding our rhythm. I think we are really clicking on all cylinders now and we've hit our stride entering the biggest part of the season," were the comments of Cassius Sendish.

Jake Heaps is now nearly halfway through the year without an interception
Although they didn't score 40+ points, the offense was still very effective in moving the ball against the TCU defense. After Heaps lost a fumble on the first drive, the offense was able to score on every remaining possession.
It's becoming almost cliche to mention it, but Sims was once again a key role in the offense as he ran for 153 yards. As well, Heaps didn't throw an interception again today as he continues to show that he is one of the best game-managing quarterbacks in the nation.
"We're currently sitting at 5-0 and that's awesome," said Heaps, "but next week is our most challenging game of the year and we're going to have to play better than we did today in order to beat them."

After the win, the Jayhawks move into the top 25 for the first time this year, sitting as the #25 team in the country. They play against Oklahoma next week, which is currently 6-0 and the #6 team in the country. This is the Big 12 game of the week, and it should be very exciting to see who comes out on top.

Defense Continues Spectacular Play versus Texas Tech
Kansas 45 - Texas Tech 7
Sims continues amazing play; rushes for 142 yards and 2 TDs
Lawrence, Kansas -- Going into Saturday's contest against Texas Tech, Kansas had not won a conference game since 2010 versus Colorado, who is no longer even a member of the Big 12. On College Gameday, all of the show's analysts picked the 3-1 Red Raiders to defeat the 3-0 Jayhawks, but it would't take long in this contest for Kansas to once again show that this team is not to be taken lightly.
Kansas would score a touchdown on two of its first three possessions, and force the normally stout Texas Tech offense to only 16 yards of total offense in the first half. At the half, Kansas led 17-0 and only continued to score after the half.
Kansas's triple option and spread offense continued its dominance of opposing defenses as the team rushed for 255 yards on offense; 142 of those coming from the legs of James Sims.
"It's honestly the same thing it's been for the past couple of weeks. My offensive line opens the holes and all I have to do is run through them. Coach Gruden has implemented an offensive style here that is entirely unique to the rest of the country, and I'm just here to play the best I can. If I run for 200 yards or 2 yards it doesn't matter as long as we're winning," said Sims during his post-game conference.
Not to be overlooked was the efforts of quarterback Jake Heaps, who continues to have one of the most quite years in the nation, despite putting up really fabulous numbers. Heaps threw for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the most impressive part is that the junior quarterback still has yet to throw and interception.
"It's not hard to not turn the ball over when you have a running game as great as we do here in Lawrence," said Heaps. His season total is now 11 touchdowns (10 passing, 1 rushing) and no interceptions.

Heaps stumbles into the endzone on his first rushing TD of the season
Also not the be overlooked is the defense of the Jayhawks, which held Texas Tech to only 142 yards of total offense and 7 points. Since giving up 31 points in the season opener against South Dakota, the defense of Kansas has given up a combined 21 points over the last three contests.
"We really got our a** handed to us after that game against South Dakota," said linebacker Ben Heeney, "since then, we've gone through every practice with a new sense of purpose and determination. As long as we continue that, we can play with any team in the country."
It was an amazing team effort, but the true defensive standout of the afternoon was Senior defensive end Jordan Tavai, who had four sacks. Sadly, Tavai couldn't be reached for comment after the game.

Kansas Dominates Louisiana Tech in Final Non-Conference Game
Kansas 44 - Louisiana Tech 7
Kansas quarterbacks combined for 4 TD tosses; including this 6 yard TD pass to Rodriguez Coleman
Lawrence, Kansas -- The Kansas team showed again on Saturday that they are not at all similar to the team of 2012 as they ran Louisiana Tech out of the building, 44-7. The first quarter ended with the score tied 7-7 after both teams scored on their opening possession, but the Kansas defense would stiffen up, giving up no further points and only 136 yards of total offense over the course of the remaining 3 quarters. As well, the offensive unit continued their hot start to the season, gaining 450 yards of total offense, with 240 of those yards coming through the ground game.
After the game, coach Gruden said "overall it was a really good performance. Both units were clicking from the start of the game and we were able to execute our game plan very well. We weren't perfect, and we'll need to continue to get better if we hope to compete in the Big 12 this year. We'll need to get back to practice and button up some little things, but these kids are playing well right now and I believe they'll continue that as conference play begins."
Once again the star of the game was James Sims, who ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries while adding 26 yards and two more touchdowns receiving. Sims wasn't the only one putting up stats today, as quarterback Jake Heaps completed 18 of 26 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns.

"The offense was rolling and our plan coming into the game worked really well," stated Heaps following the game, "we came in with a good idea of the looks they were going to show us on defense and we took advantage at any opportunity we got."
While the offense was putting up the flashy numbers, the defensive unit quietly only gave up 213 yards of total offense and 7 points. Over the course of the last two games, the defense for Kansas has given up only a combined 433 yards of total offense and 14 points.
"After they scored on that first drive we really picked up the pace and just flew to the ball. Everybody got in on the tackling and the team chemistry was just phenomenal today," said Junior linebacker and defensive captain, Ben Heeney.
As well, the defense got their first two turnovers of the year, intercepting Louisiana Tech quarterback, Scotty Young, on two separate occasions.

Defense Holds their Ground; Kansas Wins in Blowout versus Rice
Kansas - 51 Rice - 7
James Sims had an amazing day; running for 187 yards and 2 TDs
Lawrence, Kansas -- After the close game against South Dakota last week, many experts were picking Rice to potentially take down Kansas this week, but the Jayhawks proved early that last week will not be the game that defines their season.
"I thought the guys played much better this week, especially on the defensive side of the ball," were Gruden's comments following the conclusion of the Jayhawks victory, "last week I think our guys were playing more to not make mistakes rather than trying to make plays. We tried to correct that all week in practice and I believe the results showed on the field."
The defensive front 7 were the stars of the game. Taylor McHargue, the Rice quarterback, was sacked 5 times on the day, with 4 of those coming from defensive linemen Marquel Combs and Jordan Tavai; who each had 2 sacks. Ben Heeney made his presence known with 5 tackles, 2 of which were for losses.
While the defense was very impressive, the offense was also firing on all cylinders; scoring 51 points on a team that only gave up 28 points to Texas A&M in Week 1.

McCay added another TD reception to the season by way of a 40 yard pass from Heaps
The offense was able to confuse and dominate the Rice defense from the start of the game, totaling 515 yards of offense at the end of the day. What was a surprise was that of those 515 yards, 342 came on the ground. The star on offense was none other than offensive captain, James Sims. Sims put together 187 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on only 14 carries.
"Between my offensive line opening up holes and the triple option working so well there was really no excuse for me to not have a big day. I just ran through the holes that opened up and did my best to make a man or two miss," said Sims on his amazing performance.
Although he didn't have the best of days through the air, quarterback Jake Heaps played very well. He was able to execute the triple option perfectly in only his second game in the system, which allowed for the running game to be almost unstoppable.
"I'm not a stats guy, I'm just here to do anything I can to win. Selfish football was one of the reasons we were 1-11 last year, and for us to improve we have to be willing to do anything to win," said Heaps.

With the game securely in-hand halfway through the third, many back-ups got playing time, including third-string tailback, Taylor Cox
Kansas will host Louisiana Tech next week in their final game before conference play begins.

Offense Shines, Defense Disappoints in Season Opening Win for Kansas
Kansas - 48 South Dakota - 31
Sims dives into the endzone on an electrifying 21 yard TD run
Lawrence, Kansas -- After the bye in Week 1 many fans of the Jayhawks were expecting an easy win in the season opener against South Dakota; however, what they got was anything but easy. From the start of the game the offense was clicking, but the defense failed to get the memo as they allowed South Dakota to put up 31 points and 413 yards of total offense.
"We need to understand that we can't play that way and expect to win," said Gruden during his post game press conference, "we simply weren't able to stop them through the air or on the ground. They're touchdown percentage in the redzone and third down efficiency were way too high. We'll need to go back and start to get better in a lot of areas for next week's game."
The defensive MVP for the game was outside linebacker Marcus Jenkins-Moore, who was able to record 5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Despite many opportunities, the defensive secondary failed to record a single turnover while allowing South Dakota QB Richard Mathis to throw for 318 yards and 2 touchdowns.

"We were awful today, no doubt about it. We're going to go back to practice this week and double the effort we've been putting in because that wasn't Kansas football," were the comments of Junior defensive captain, Ben Heeney, following the game.
Despite a poor defensive showing, the offense was clicking for most of the day. After scoring only 3 points in the first quarter, the unit was able to put up 48 points by the end of the game. As well, the team mustered 463 yards of total offense, with 310 of those yards coming by way of the arm of quarterback Jake Heaps.
"I just went out there and played. There were a lot of yards after the catch and my guys made me look good today. Having a balanced run game also opened up the play action all day," said Heaps following his performance. Heaps was named the MVP of the game.

"I just went out there and played. There were a lot of yards after the catch and my guys made me look good today. Having a balanced run game also opened up the play action all day," said Heaps following his performance. Heaps was named the MVP of the game.
Junior wide receiver, Justin McCay, came up big with 5 receptions for 98 yards and a TD
Now that the Kansas team has been tested early, the hope is that they will be able to perform better in their week three matchup against Rice on the road.

2013 Season Preview - University of Kansas Jayhawks
August 31, 2013
Kansas looks to bounce back after a very poor 1-11 record in 2012
Lawrence, Kansas -- The University of Kansas Jayhawks enter the 2013 season predicted to finish dead last in the conference by ESPN analysts, but that doesn't come as much of a surprise to first year head coach Jon Gruden, who pulled no punches in describing the 2012 Kansas team...
"Last year's team was not competitive nor was it the kind of product that this university expects to put on the field," said Gruden in his opening press conference last March. He went on to say, "we will need to improve at every phase of the game, and I believe that we have the kids to turn this program around. All it's going to take is hard work, dedication, and a little luck."
Those comments were given nearly 6 months ago, and with training camp over and the start of the season only a week away it'll be interesting to see just how well Gruden's coaching techniques have paid off, but as we all know coaches aren't the ones that play the game, so let's take a look at the roster for the 2013 Kansas Jayhawks.
The 2013 team returns only 3 players on offense and 2 on defense from a team that was comprised of mostly Seniors in 2012, which could be just the infusion of new talent that this team needs to get over the woes of last season.
On offense, the team will rely on a running game anchored by returning Senior tailback, James Sims. Sims ran for 1013 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2012, becoming one of the best halfbacks in all of the conference. Sims will be complimented by first year quarterback, Jake Heaps. Heaps is coming into his first year of eligibility after transferring from BYU in 2011. While at BYU, Heaps threw for 3,768 yards and 24 touchdowns during his Freshman and Sophomore seasons combined. Heaps will be throwing to an extremely inexperienced receiving corps, headlined by Junior Justin McCay.

Kansas will look to improve on an offense that was ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 in 2012
On defense, Kansas will look to a crop of new players to hold opposing offenses this year. Ben Heeney, one of the two returning defensive starters, will look to provide some stability and leadership from the middle linebacker position. As a Sophomore last year, Heeney was ranked third in the Big 12 in tackles (112) and fifth in tackles for loss (12). As well, the defensive line looks to be a bright spot for the team, with 2012 starter Jordan Tavai and key back-up Marquel Combs returning for the unit. The secondary of the defense is uncertain to say the least. Not a single player has any significant playing experience on a unit with no seniors. It will be interesting to see just how youthful the group plays in 2013.
The youthful defense of the Jayhawks is a big question mark for the team, and only time will tell how they perform
The Jayhawks open the season at Memorial Stadium against the South Dakota Coyotes on September 7th.
In a Shocking Twist, Jon Gruden is Returning to Coaching
March 17, 2013
Many speculated Gruden would soon be returning to coaching, but nobody expected it would be for the University of Kansas
Lawrence, Kansas -- Nearly two months after the firing of former head football coach Charlie Weis, the University of Kansas has named it's new head man for the 2013 football season. Jon Gruden, who will be the 38th head coach in team history, made the shocking announcement today alongside a representative for the university.
Gruden (pictured above) will be turning 50 this year and last coached in 2008 as the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being fired by the organization. As well, Gruden compiled a lifetime coaching record of 95-81 in the NFL to go along with his win in Super Bowl XXXVII. It has been speculated for the past two years that Gruden could be making a return to coaching, but nobody was expecting him to be the next head coach at Kansas.
When asked about why he decided to accept the position, Gruden responded "I guess I just like a challenge. Despite the past failures, I truly haven't seen a football program that has a greater amount of support from the school and from the fan base. I believe that it'll be a lot of hard work, but there is nothing stopping this program from becoming a national power."
It's impossible to tell if what Gruden said will hold true, but what is certain is that Kansas will have one of the most sought after coaching prospects of recent years on the sidelines for them next year. The program appears to be taking steps in the right direction with this move, but now Gruden will have to transfer all this new hype for the program into success on the field.

Charlie Weis Officially out as Kansas Head Coach
January 22, 2013
Weis spent only one season as the Kansas Head Coach before being fired by the team.
Lawrence, Kansas -- The Charlie Weis "era" officially came to an end today, according to a spokesperson for the University of Kansas. In his only season as the head man for the Jayhawks, Weis posted a record of 1-11, with the team's only win coming against South Dakota State in the season opener. Weis was brought in to turn around a program that hasn't won a conference game since the 2010 season and hasn't gone to a bowl game since the 2008 Insight Bowl, but the team's abysmal performance this past season, plus a recruiting class that fell short of expectations, has caused the university to go in another direction.
"Charlie [Weis] is a great man and we wish him all the best wherever he may end up, but the university has decided to explore different options for the football coach for the 2013 season. We plan to begin this search immediately and are looking forward to bringing in someone to get this program back on the right track," said University of Kansas Athletic Director, Sheahon Zenger, following the news that Weis wouldn't be returning for the 2013 season.
The university has kept dark who their current coaching targets are, but speculation is that the team could be attempting to bring a former coach out of retirement. Only time will tell where this leads.
