For years now people have wondered if the super-fight of the century would ever happen. The fight between the 185 lbs king and 170 lbs champion would undoubtedly have the highest buy rate of any Pay-Per-View. Unfortunately, we probably won't see this fight for a while (rumor has it, it may happen sometime after a possible GSP vs Hendricks bout).
Currently, Sherdog.com has Anderson "the Spider" Silva ranked #1 as the pound-for-pound best, with Georges "Rush" St. Pierre at a close second. Most fight fans would accept this as fact. Now the real question is how big is the gap between the top spot and the second?
Huge. Watching both competitors fights (over and over again) one thing really sticks out to me; GSP can't really finish tough guys. Silva meanwhile has KO victories over proven tough guys like Sonnen, Okami, Belfort, Cote, and Marquart (in fact, Silva is the only one to ever KO both Cote and Marquart). When it comes to striking, Silva's ability to land clean shots and counters is second to none. Not only does he throw vicious power punches and kicks, he does so with such velocity. Although GSP does have spectacular stand up skills, he is no match for Silva when it comes to striking.
GSP's only real advantage is the fact that he is a better wrestler. Dan Henderson, another world class wrestler, is probably the only guy to ever win a round against Silva in the UFC. But as he was quick to learn, taking a fighter with a black belt in BJJ to the ground isn't always a good idea. GSP's best bet would essentially be to take the fight to the ground and hope for the best (GSP himself is also a black belt in BJJ). Though, I honestly do believe that taking the fight to the ground would not be enough to defeat a guy like Silva.
GSP may be well rounded but his skills are no match for those of Silva. GSP has had way too many close fights, while Silva rarely has any. Condit almost had GSP finished a few times in their fight and most people would agree Silva is a better striker than Condit.
Though it may not seem important, GSP has only ever faced one opponent that has had a reach advantage over him; Jason "Mayhem" Miller. How did Dana White describe Miller's stand up after his fight with Bisping? "That was the worst stand-up I have ever seen in my life". Which I believe makes it fair to mention the near 2" reach advantage Silva would have.
I can't wait to see this fight if it ever does happen. To all the GSP fans out there I just want to let you know that this fight has KO written all over it for Anderson Silva.

Like I said, Chael beat Anderson Silva in the first 4 round in their first fight. Henderson did nothing like that. I think Chael was prob the only guy at MW that could beat Silva. That second fight he went out there swinging like an idiot and just blew the fight. He took Silva down fast. Silva grabbed Sonnen's trunks and hit him with a questionable knee to the ground.
I hate Silva for the way he taunted Maia in their fight. It was a disgrace. And for taking that Bonnar fight, when he had plenty of other fights worth paying to watch. I think Chris Weidman now is Silva's only challenger at MW. Bisping and Stann would prob get KO'd by Silva
But GSP has the same chance of beating Silva that Silva does of beating GSP. I want to see this fight.

I think Johny Hendricks fight with Jake Ellenberger is being called a WW title eliminator, but don't count on it. Alexander Gustaffson and Shogun's fight was called a LHW title eliminator. And Gustaffon's title shot got put on hold, now he has to fight someone else.

What you mentioned are quality wins for Silva I left out on purpose just because I don't believe it's fair to mention guys who have been beaten badly in one manner or another. I should have clarified the guys I did mention how been notoriously hard for people to knockout, so tough as in difficult to put on their ***. If it was up to me, Chris Leben would be considered very tough but he's not because quite frankly he sucks.
I did forget to mention the first Sonnen bout because I haven't watched MMA in 2 years, so I've literally been plowing through events on a nightly basis. But to Silva's credit he did avenge that performance by beating Sonnen a second time.
Though I do agree with your idea that Silva is aging and the decline is bound to happen, I don't see it happening against GSP. I think it would take a LHW to do that, not necessarily Jones.
I still firmly believe that GSP could not beat Silva with a methodical stand up exchange. I understand how both fighters fight, I just think Silva would be too much for him. I honestly see GSP losing to someone before I see Silva losing.

Silva and GSP would prob dance around each other for 3 rounds, I see it going 5 rights and being a unan decision. It's going to take a wrestler obviously to beat Silva as no one can strike with him at 185. There's a few guys that could beat him at LHW. He won't fight them though. He would rather fight Stephan Bonnar.

GSP and Silva would be a chess match fight that would prob be boring as hell. They are both fighters who don't take chances. They fight the same way. The only difference is that the guys that Silva has fought try to attack Silva and get destroyed by his countering-style. GSP has fought guys like Koscheck and Shields recently, who can provide boring fights as well. Condit challenged GSP and GSP still rebounded and won the fight. GSP was flat out beaten by Matt Hughes and Hughes' experience. Matt Serra got GSP with a lucky punch. GSP hasn't been the same since the Dan Hardy fight it seems like.
Now, most people/fans, I'd say 60% would call Silva the best php. I don't. I think Jon Jones is the best pound for pound due to the way he has completely demolished the best of the sport in the most competitive weight class in MMA. I'd put GSP at #2 because I think the Welterweight division is much more competitive than Middleweight.
Silva hasn't fought a wrestle like GSP who can also strike. That's why I think GSP/Silva would be a 50/50 fight.
I don't know where your sources and rumors are coming from. Georges St Pierre is fighting Nick Diaz next month at UFC 158. Then he will prob fight Rory McDonald or have a rematch with Condit. Then maybe Hendricks, or the Super Fight with Anderson Silva.
Anderson Silva is currently working out a new contract with the UFC. Where Dana White has said that in his new contract he would fight both GSP and Jon Jones. I'm not going to discuss Jones vs Silva, because Jon Jones would kill Anderson Silva. End of discussion.
Now look at Anderson Silva's wins. First off, Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, Demian Maia, and DEFINITELY Patrick Cote ARE NOT proven tough guys or quality wins. GSP beat Jake Shields. Sheilds beat Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami in the same night. Anderson's wins over Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, and Chael Sonnen twice, are his most impressive. His wins over Chris Leben and Forrest Griffin are decent wins too. GSP has defeated BJ Penn twice, Matt Hughes, Koscheck twice, Shields, Jon Fitch, Carlos Condit, and now his next fight is against Nick Diaz. Then he has rising star Rory MacDonald on the path. I know they train together, but I think they will fight each other.
Anderson Silva to me is a guy who cheats the audience. He ducks competition. Look at his last fight, against Stephan Bonnar. It was an absolute joke and ripoff to the fans. It was a meaningless fight and Bonnar even failed the post fight test for PEDs. Meaning that Bonnar had no chance. Anderson Silva should have never cheated the fans and took that fight. Silva turned down a fight with Jon Jones, and instead of Bonnar, he should have fought Vitor Belfort again. Belfort he hit with a one hit kick. I think Vitor would do better in a rematch. Or, Silva should have defended his title against Chris Weidman. Another rising middleweight who deserves a shot. Hell, I would have rather seen Silva fight Bisping, Mark Munoz, or Brian Stann, than fight Bonnar in the most garbage fight of the year. Anderson Silva has talent, no doubt. There aren't enough quality wrestlers who can strike at middleweight that are capable of beating Silva. I think if Rashad Evans dropped down, he could beat Silva.
Now, you said that Dan Henderson was the only quality wrestler to win a round against Silva. WRONG. This lets me know that you didn't watch Silva's first fight against Sonnen. In their first fight, Chael Sonnen absolutely destroyed Anderson Silva for 4 1/2 rounds before being submitted late in the 5th round. Chael won all 4 rounds against Silva.
Also, you brought up Daniel Miller's fight with GSP and his last against Bisping. Mayhem was a decent fighter when he fought GSP, ALMOST 8 YEARS AGO. The Mayhem Miller now is just a shell of his old self. Dude wasn't prepared to fight Bisping.
GSP has the wrestling, the striking, and the smarts to beat Anderson Silva. Most likely by decision. GSP fights smart, which people call boring.
Silva has an inch reach on GSP. Jones has nearly a foot on both of them.
Silva's quality wins are: Sonnen(2x), Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin(2x), Yushin Okami, Chris Leben, & Forrest Griffin.
GSP's quality wins are: Carlos Condit, Matt Hughes(2x), BJ Penn(2x), Jake Shields, Josh Koscheck(2x), Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, & Sean Sherk.
Silva's wins over Cote, Marquardt, Leites, Lutter, Bonnar, James Irvin, a Demian Maia are not great wins. Just like GSP's over Dan Hardy, Mayhem Miller, Frank Trigg, & Matt Serra aren't.
Bottom line is that this fight is closer to happening than most people think. I think this fight is 50/50, unlike Jones/Silva, which would be like 85/15 Jones. GSP and Silva are close in style and skills. It would definitely be Silva's best opponent.
I think the fight would end in a decision. It could be the start of Silva's decline like we saw with Fedor. If Silva didn't beat GSP he wouldn't fight Jon Jones.
But I love to discuss MMA. I will talk it all day long...It's good to see an MMA post.
