"The Dying Breed"
Using the Fullback in Madden 13
He's the guy with the unrecognizable face in the CBS Sunday starting lineup. The man who makes casual fans say, "Who's that; is he new?" The player who, if he's lucky enough to touch the ball once during the game, signals announcers to utter the phrase that makes Mike Alstott cringe... "The fullback is a dying breed in the NFL."
In today's pass-happy NFL, the fullback position is beginning to fade in favor of spread offenses and multiple tight end formations. But in our virtual NFL, gamers know that the fullback position can be an underrated weapon. Madden 13 offers a unique mix of fullbacks that are worth taking a look at in your CCM.
The Bulldozer
Vonta Leach
Bulldozers like Vonta Leach are rare in Madden. Leach is the only fullback on a roster with a run block rating above 80 (Greg Jones and Jed Collins come in at exactly 80). When Leach blasts holes for Ray Rice, it's like the Ravens have an extra offensive lineman on the field.
The Runner
Mike Tolbert
Running fullbacks like Mike Tolbert excel at gaining that yard or two in Madden before the defensive line can get off their blocks. Tolbert has the highest trucking rating of any fullback (95), and a few more players in a similar mold are Greg Jones, Michael Robinson, and Le'Ron McClain.
The Receiver
Marcel Reece
Marcel Reece is perhaps the most dangerous fullback in the history of Madden. Reece bursts out of the backfield with absurd speed ratings for a fullback (90 speed, 92 acceleration, 92 agility). He boasts an 83 catch rating and is the ultimate "secret weapon" for an unsuspecting defense. The only fullback with a higher catch rating than Reece is the the Texans' James Casey - a converted tight end.
The Passer?
Michael Robinson
Maybe not in Madden 13, but if create-a-play ever returns to the Madden series maybe this one could happen. Michael Robinson is a converted college quarterback who now plays fullback (we don't see this one often), and if EA ever gives us the ability to pass out of the fullback position, he's our guy.
The Terminator
John Conner
My personal favorite at the fullback position in Madden 13 is John Conner - "The Terminator." I don't care how many years it may take in CCM; I'm going to develop John Conner into the next Mike Alstott. My only hope is that the announcers call him "Terminator" when he carries the ball.
Do you use the fullback in Madden? If so, what fullbacks are you looking forward to using in Madden 13?
