CHICAGO -- Gm Stan Bowman has announced that organ-I-zation has decided to extend Mike Haviland two additional years. Haviland 3 year contract was due to expire at the end of the year.
Statement from Bowman: "Two and a half years ago this organ-I-zation was on the brink, brink of being dismantled, brink of greatness, we didn't know. That's when Mr. McDonough and Rocky Wirtz decided to choose the path of greatness. They trusted me with my vision of the future by giving me a five year deal, in turn I trusted Mike Haviland to lead this team to greatness. With his tremendous success over his first two plus years it is my pleasure to announce that we have extended his contract two more years beginning at the end of this season."
This doesn't really come as a surprise to many of the sources close to the team, but it is nice to see the team get this taken care of before the off season came, and there would be no other target for teams with openings than Haviland. Already thought of as being a solid coaching prospect his status has only been elevated by leading the Hawks to two straight Cups. It's nice to see the Hawks take care of their own.
Haviland Snapshot:
- Signed a three year deal to coach the Hawks at the end of the 2013 season.
- In his two plus seasons he has amassed a record of (127-68-17)
- Won two Stanley Cups in his first two NHL coaching seasons.
- New two year extension will keep him the coach of the Hawks thru the 2018-2019 season.
- George Cotugno for Blackhawks TV
