The Hawks wasted no time in Game One, and seemed to feed off of their new found energy from winning the series over the Oilers. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews broke in on a two on one early in the first and Tazer finished off a beauty off a backhand saucer pass from Kane to make it 1-0. From there on out in the first period the pendulum swung more towards the Wild. The Wild got right to their type of hockey, get the puck deep and grind, and that's exactly what led to their only goal of the period and it was a late one. Jaromir Jagr, seemingly ageless, created a turnover on the halfwall, walked it and beat Crawford to tie the game at one. The Hawks need to adjust, the style of the Wild is the complete opposite of that of the Oilers, hopefully the Hawks can still find a way to play their game as we head to period two....
It's amazing how two opponents can be so different. The Hawks only managed nine shots in the second period but that was good enough to out shoot the Wild by FIVE. The Hawks have out shot the Wild 17-13 thru two periods as we remained tied up at one. The main concern for the Hawks has to be the failed power plays. Against a team like the Wild, you need to score on the power plays to be successful, because 5 on 5 there is not a lot of room at all. The Hawks did a better job of playing their game in the second stanza, if they can keep at it and not get frustrated or force plays then they should have a good shot at taking game one. On the other side of the ice the Wild have the Hawks right where they want them, one weird bounce, or deflected puck, and the Wild take game one, we are tied headed to the third...
Work hard, then a little harder, and you still might not be rewarded, and that's right where the Hawks are sitting right now as we head to overtime in Game One of the Western Conference Semi Finals. One can see where the Wild had so much success against Colorado, also a fast, puck moving team. The Wild are shutting off everything at the moment, the Hawks were able to generate 11 shots in the third period, but most of them were from the perimeter. It seems as though the Hawks are playing the same game as the Wild, try not to take too many chances and hope for a break, it's what the Wild do best, so maybe that's the way to beat them. The Wild were only able to get three, yes, three shots on goal in the third period. They are content to dump, chase, and hope for a bounce or two. The Hawks have played a solid game, they just need to keep at it to win it or they might be chasing after game one. The Hawks have outshot the Wild 28-16 thru three periods, we are headed to OT..
What a difference a period makes, just when you thought the Wild were content with lulling you to sleep they explode, and that's exactly what they did. Maybe the Hawks were lulled to sleep, but all of a sudden the Wild were on attack, in the first five minutes of the period they hit a post (the inside of it) and drew a penalty. While on the power play they hit another post. The Wild continued to push the play for the first ten minutes of the period, and low and behold they get their break... a penalty shot. Luckily the Hawks have Crawford as he stoned Setoguchi to keep this one alive. The Hawks seemed to realize half way thru the period that the Wild were not going to slow the pace down so they skated right with them. Each team had 13 shots in the first OT period, yet we remain knotted at 1. Thru one OT period the Hawks have outshot the Wild 41-29, wonder what Wild team will come out for the second OT period, time to find out...
The Wild came out fearless for the second straight period, throwing anything and everything at Crawford, but he was up to the task. The Wild however, got caught in there own game, a wayward drop pass at the Hawks blue line missed the Wild defender and Wayne Simmonds fresh off the bench out raced the defender to the puck, with a step on the defender Simmonds was in all alone. Fake forehand, backhand, back to the forehand and he buried it! The United Center was up for grabs, the Hawks take game one in thrilling fashion, one can only hope the rest of these games are as entertaining, as the OT's at least.
