As far as starts go, this one was bad, however the scoreboard read something completely different. The Coyotes carried the play throughout the first period but at the end of 20 the Hawks held a 2-0 lead thanks in part to the Bolland, Hossa, Stalberg line which seems to be the only think going right for the Hawks right now. Stalberg had a puck go off his leg and in, and Hossa was able to snipe the top corner and just like that the Hawks head to the 2nd period up 2-0 despite being outshot 11-5.
The second period started much like the first, the Hawks chasing all over the ice. The Coyotes were able to pull within a goal early in the second as Radim Vrbata was able to bang home a rebound just under 2 minutes into the period. From that point on the period was wide open, and the play was up and down the ice. The Hawks caught a break midway thru the period when they were sent to the PP, and off the draw the Coyotes cleared the puck over the glass to put the Hawks up two guys. But Mike Smith stood tall, making quality stop after quality stop. No less then 30 seconds after the Coyotes killed off both penalties the Hawks were able to strike as Toews finished a sick feed from Kane to give the Hawks a 2 goal lead, and that's where we stand headed to the 3rd period.
Now that is Blackhawks hockey. Bottle that one up and use it the rest of the season, after two wide open periods the Hawks clamped down in the third limiting a Coyote team that was chasing two goals to only 6 shots. While that might seem boring to some, it's music to coach Q's ears, "That's how we need to play for 60 minutes, having a ton of talent is great, but if you turn the puck over consistently you will be using that talent to retrieve the puck from your net." The Hawks are officially on a roll, that's four straight, taking care of teams they should beat early in the season so they aren't chasing points late in the year.
