Game-winning field goal gives Cal first Rose Bowl win since 1937
Posted on July 24, 2016 at 08:21 PM.

PASADENA - Noah Beito booted a 32-yard field goal with three seconds to go to boost No. 7 California to a 24-23 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 2017 Rose Bowl game.

Beito had missed a 44-yard just minutes before he was called upon again to close out the Golden Bears historic season.

The Volunteers thought they had the game won as Aaron Medley hit a 41-yard field goal to take a 23-21 lead with 35 seconds left in the game, but Davis Webb led Cal down the field on a five-play, 61-yard drive to get within Beito's range.

Webb finished the game completing 35-of-59 passes for 384 yards and two interceptions, but added a key touchdown on the ground on four carries for 25 yards.

A defensive battle in the first half started to fizzle as the Vols scored first on a Medley field goal midway through the second quarter, then Vic Enwere ran in a short touchdown to lead 7-3. However, the Vols would find the end zone twice in the final 1:30 of the first half to take a 17-7 lead into the locker room.

Enwere found the end zone again for Cal in the third and Tennessee added another field goal to carry a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter.

Webb would score on an 11-yard run to take put Cal up 21-20 with just over two minutes to go, but Joshua Dobbs led the Vols within Medley's range for what they believed would be the game-winning field goal.

Dobbs finished the game 20-of-31 for 310 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Marquez North led the Vols (10-3, 6-2) with seven catches for 121 yards, but Josh Malone added a touchdown and 89 yards on four catches.

Chad Hansen led Cal receivers with eight catches for 113 yards and Kanawai Noa added six catches for 83 yards.

The win gives Cal (13-1, 9-1) its first Rose Bowl win in 80 years to cap off one of the best seasons in school history.
