ORLANDO - It took two overtimes and plenty of trips to the charity stripe but California outlasted Georgia State 93-88 last night in the first round of the Deodorant Classic Tournament.

Ivan Rabb was a force for the Golden Bears and a major reason they hung on to force the first overtime. Rabb finished the day with a double-double, 32 points and 15 rebounds.

Rabb's double-double helped the Golden Bears propel past the Panthers.

Jabari Bird had a career day as well, adding 29 points for Cal, including a 5-of-8 outing from beyond the arc. Jordan Mathews added 10 points and Kameron Rooks scored 12 for the Golden Bears.

Cal had its best day of the year from the free-throw line, shooting 19-of-24 as a team, including a stint where they made 17 straight.

Ryan Harrow led the way for Georgia State with a double-double, 27 points and 13 rebounds and gave Cal fits all day long.

R.J. Hunter added 22 points and Jalen Brown grabbed 15 boards for the Panthers.

The Panthers took charge early and got out to a 13-2 lead but the Golden Bears would fight back as Mathews, Bird, and Brandon Chauca each drained a 3-pointer to tie the game up again 24-24 with 4:12 left in the first half.

Georgia State began to pull away again and took a 34-31 lead into halftime.

After the break, both teams were neck-and-neck until the Panthers built an eight-point lead, 59-51 with 4:43 left in regulation.

Mathews cut the lead to five, 59-54, with a 3-pointer with 4:18 to go. Ivan Rabb forced his way to the bucket two more times to pull within two, 61-59.

T.J. Shipes fouled out for Georgia State with 3:28 to go and sent Rooks to the line for two. Rooks made both to tie it 61-61. Both teams scored again to end regulation 63-63

At the end of the first overtime, Rabb scored a field goal to break the tie with 3.6 seconds left, 79-77, but Jordan Session drained a long 2-pointer at the buzzer to force a second overtime.

Deep in foul trouble and with an already thin roster, the Panthers (1-1) were simply spent and couldn't hang on as the Golden Bears (4-2) would pull away with the win.
