Late surge helps Jacksonville State pull away from Cal 57-49

KENNESAW - Darion Rackley scored 17 points to lead Jacksonville State to a 57-49 win over California in the first round of the 100 Club Classic Tournament at Kennesaw State University on Friday.

Rackley led all scorers with 17 points.

Jamal Hunter added a double-double for the Gamecocks with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while D.J. Felder was one point shy, with nine points and 13 rebounds.

The Gamecocks defense held point guard Charlie Moore scoreless and Moore would foul out with four minutes left in the game. Jabari Bird, Jordan Mathews and Kameron Rooks all scored 10 points a piece for the Golden Bears and Ivan Rabb added seven points, 17 rebounds and three blocks.

Cal started the game strong on a 9-2 opening run, but Jacksonville State fought back and took a one-point lead into halftime, 24-23. Cal turned the ball over six times in the first half and was 0-of-8 beyond the arc.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second half and with 5:22 to go the game was tied 39-39. The Gamecocks began to pull away in the final 3 1/2 minutes as Cal (2-2) got into foul trouble, which helped Jacksonville State (2-2) add to its lead.

In the other opening round game, Colgate defeated Texas State 68-57 to advance to the finals against Jacksonville State. California will play Texas State in a consolation game.
