Trey Lewis' 24 points leads Cleveland State past Cal in Berkeley

BERKELEY - Cleveland State had a dominant first half and held off a late Cal rally to knock off the Golden Bears 64-60 at home.

Trey Lewis led the Vikings with 24 points and Sebastian Douglas added 20 of his own.

The Vikings got out to an early 18-5 lead with 8:30 left in the first half and built it to 37-23 at the break.

Cleveland State led by as much as 20 points before Cal rallied back.

After the half, they continued to add points and led by as much as 20, 47-27, with just over eight minutes left in the game.

However, Ivan Rabb and Charlie Moore were not going to go down easy as those two, along with Jabari Bird, steadily chipped away at the lead.

Cal went on a 15-2 run as a Bird 3-pointer pulled the Golden Bears within nine, 49-40, which Rabb followed with a layup to pull within seven, 49-42.

Charlie Moore hit four 3-pointers in the final three minutes, including one to cut the lead to three, 58-55, with 2:11 to go, and one to tie it 58-58 with 1:37 left.

After a career performance, Trey Lewis wasn't ready to let to upset win slip away from the Vikings and he responded with a 3-pointer of his own to lead 61-58 with 1:13 remaining. The Golden Bears, who were in foul trouble all game long, sent Douglas to the line and he made both to pull ahead 63-58.

A Rabb layup put Cal (2-1) at 60, but a desperation foul would send Lewis to the line again for the Vikings (1-1) with six seconds to go. Lewis made one and Cleveland State won 64-60.
