Cal up to seven commits for 2017 as three more jump on board

Despite dropping its first loss of the year to No. 6 UCLA, 33-24, Cal is still sitting at No. 16 in the country, bowl eligible at 6-1 and hot on the recruiting trail.

After Saturday's loss to the Bruins, on Sunday, the coaches got some good news when three more recruits made pledges to the 2017 class, including their top quarterback target, Mark Hall of Augusta (Kan.).

Hall is rated 86 overall and three-star by the 247Composite and had offers from Tulsa, North Texas, Kansas, as well as interest from Penn State.

"The coaches told me I'm their guy for this class and they don't plan on taking another quarterback in this class," Hall told TheBearsDen.com

Hall is 6-foot-1, 196 pounds and has been clocked as low as a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash.

San Jose (Calif.) defensive tackle Jonathan Smith also jumped on board over the weekend.

"Cal's education is top notch and that was a major factor for me," Smith said. "Also, spots are starting to fill up so I went ahead and committed."

The 6-foot-2, 274-pounder is rated 83 overall and three-star by the 247Composite and chose Cal over San Jose State, San Diego State and Nevada. UCLA had also recently got into the mix for the three-star, but had not yet offered.

Last, but not least, Modesto (Calif.) wide receiver Andre Brown committed to Cal over an offer from Colorado and increasing interest from Stanford. Brown is rated 80 overall and three-star by the 247Composite and the No. 128 receiver in the country.

"I like Cal's offense, I feel like I can catch a lot of balls," Brown said.

The Golden Bears will look to take one or two more guards and possibly a running back if they can find the right fit, then the remaining scholarships will be used on defense. They are expected to sign 20 or 21 in this class.
