Cal knocks off No. 19 Washington State behind Webb's five touchdowns
Posted on June 19, 2016 at 03:55 PM.
It was a heated, physical battle from the get-go.
Webb finished the day 27 of 41 for 385 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions and punched in another score on the goal line for Cal. Freshman receiver Carlos Strickland was on the receiving end of three of Webb's touchdowns and finished the day with six total catches for 107 yards.
Chad Hansen also eclipsed the 100-yard mark, with five catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Khalfani Muhammad rushed 23 times for 154 yards and caught seven passes for 37 yards for the Golden Bears.
Gabe Marks hauled in 15 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns for Washington State and River Cracraft added five catches for 86 yards and one score.
After a scoreless first quarter from both teams, the Golden Bears struck first when Webb connected with Strickland for a 24-yard touchdown midway through the second. Moments later Luke Falk led a touchdown drive for the Cougars to take a 7-7 tie into halftime.
Strickland was on the receiving end of three Webb touchdowns.
The halftime speech apparently hit home as Cal came out fired up after the break. A few plays into the third quarter, Strickland hauled in his second touchdown, a 70-yarder, and followed it with a 7-yard score on the next drive.
Falk wasn't going to let the Cougars (3-2) go down easy as he found Gabe Marks for touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to cut the lead to seven, 28-21, with 3:05 to go.
However, Webb had one more long touchdown drive in the tank, which resulted in a 60-yard strike to Chad Hansen to make it a two-score game, 35-21, and hang on to the win for Cal (6-0).
