BERKELEY - The Golden Bears offense jumped out to an early lead over Texas on Saturday, one the Longhorns couldn't quite recover from.
Davis Webb had the hot hand early on for Cal, completing 11 of 15 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game in the second quarter with a minor ankle injury.
Webb was replaced by sophomore Chase Forrest, who didn't let up on the Bear Raid assault. Forrest completed 14 of 23 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns of his own and was intercepted twice.
The crowd came alive early when Forrest found Kanawai Noa on an 87-yard touchdown strike, which Khalfani Muhammad followed with a touchdown run minutes later to lead 28-10. A Longhorn field goal closed out the first half 28-13.
Noa is a big reason Cal is now sitting at 2-0.
Forrest found Muhammad again to open up the third quarter on a 23-yard touchdown strike. At that point, Texas decided it had had enough as Shane Buechele led the Longhorns offense on three consecutive touchdown drives to pull within three, 35-32, with 1:20 left in the game.
Two plays later, Muhammad busted open a 40-yard touchdown run on a sweep to secure the win.
Muhammad's 40-yard touchdown sealed the deal for the Golden Bears.
