HONOLULU - It took them three overtimes, but the California Golden Bears managed to claw their way to victory last night against Hawai'i.
The Warriors jumped out to a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter, but Texas Tech quarterback transfer Davis Webb led the charge for Cal and brought his team back within three at halftime, 21-18.
Webb made his first start since transferring to Cal.
Webb completed 31 of 54 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns in his Golden Bear debut and also rushed 15 times for 65 yards two more scores on the ground, including the game-winner on a quarterback dive in the third overtime.
Khalfani Muhummad added 77 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for Cal and caught seven passes for 74 more.
Webb found Hansen with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Kanawai Noa was a force, leading all receivers with 104 yards on nine catches and added 44 rushing yards on four carries, but it was Chad Hansen who came up big with two touchdowns on five catches for 95 yards.
Noa returned a punt for a touchdown in the third quarter to put the Golden Bears out in front 25-21, but Hawai'i wouldn't go away easy, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to take a 42-35 lead with 1:03 to go.
Webb displayed his senior leadership and led Cal down the field and found Chad Hansen on an 11-yard strike with 10 seconds left to force overtime, where Cal (1-0) would eventually outlast Hawai'i (0-1).
