When you hear about football you commonly think of Five positions, and maybe even all eleven if you watch as often as I do. The five most common are obviously the QB, the HB, WR, LB, and DB's. However there are more than twenty-two positions on a team and I will describe the odd ones and how to involve them in your play.
Nickelbacks and Dimebacks: Wikipedia describes these as "A extra DB on the field to help prevent a teams power players to burn you for a big gain." I have noticed in Madden '10 that when i am playing a team with a strong WR core (the Patriots) I always get burned on the short routes, but when i change to stop that i get burned on the long balls.Using extra DB's is the key to stoping this at the price of losing run support. First, let me start off with the ways to use them. The most common way to do this is by using the 4-2-5 formation. However if you feel that you team still needs the line backers use the 3-3-5 formation. When you are playing madden the best playbook for this is the ravens(of course) or the raiders.
Special Teams (KR,PR, Gunners, etc.): I am going to start off with the easier one first. The KR is the person in charge of returning his kick to the "house". The best way to get a good KR (if you don't already have one) is to go to free agency and sort by the KR overall. And same goes for the PR too.Easy ways to return it are too either just plane old burst it up the middle following the blockers and either go up middle hoping or outside or go really slow and then right when you see good blocks you burst.
The gunners are a harder and more odd job to fill perfectly. In football a gunner is used to run up the field and tackle the punt returner/kick returner. More often these guys are the last hope a punt unit has. On average the best nfl gunners ideal specs are to be around 6'5" and 220 lbs. Most gunners are WR's or TE's that aren't good enough to start, but arn't bad enough to release. There is no good way to draft a gunner. You just find one every now and then.
Slotbacks: Some Slot backs have the same traits as a WR and the speed of a HB. There job is to move in motion before the ball is snapped the the QB or HB in the case of wildcat. Others are mostly the same except they are bigger (such as TE's) and are used to block Linebackers. Usually they aren't everydown players because the team has to replace a FB or a TE with him. They usually line up near the tackles of a line and could be used as Tight Ends in a goal line set.
H-Back: The more common odd positions in the NFL is the H-back. The H-Back is a hybrid of a Tight End and A Fullback. These huys are very rare to find but are often buried under the depth charts in most teams so keep looking!!!!The H-back can line up in the backfield, on the line, or is put into motion. Because of the complexity of the position, a thorough knowledge of the offense is desirable in an H-back.This position was made out of the Two-Tight End system Joe Gibb's used in washington against LT in New York in the eighties, Since then it seems that they have always had great H-Backs. Chris Cooley is the current H-Back for the redskins with great career stats to his name.
