NBA: Miami Heat fans aren't all bandwagon jumpers
Posted on September 19, 2010 at 06:04 AM.
Enough already. There were Miami Heat fans prior to Lebron James and Chris Bosh teaming up with Dwayne Wade. We all didn't jump on the bandwagon. If I am being honest, I don't care for how LeBron James carried on during the off-season albeit he ended up at our team. It was ordinary and I don't blame NBA fans for insta-hating King James and our team. I would if the shoe was on the other foot though it ain't, and I am looking forward to the season.

Let's recap. I joined the Miami Heat in 1995. I was at the time a so-so NBA fan here in Australia. I appreciated the sport, the super stars like Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Karl Malone etc. though I wasn't what you'd call a passionate basketball fan.

I started taking moderate interest in 1992. The Dream Team was MASSIVE here and they sparked my interest outside the big names in the sport. This big dude named Shaq was all over the news (big considering Australia wasn't exactly embracing the NBA outside of MJ, Magic, Drexler, Bird etc.) as well a guy who'd later become my favourite player of All-Time, Alonzo Mourning.

This is the guy that got me on the Miami Heat bandwagon, not King James.

So anyway, the coverage of the NBA got better and I started getting in to NBA cards (I still collect them and have some money making cards in my collection). I played games on my console (I loooooved the Megadrive editions of early NBA games) and if I was asked in that two year period as to who I followed, I'd have said Charlotte as I was drawn to Alonzo Mourning and to a lesser extent, Larry Johnson.

Anyway, come 1995 Zo' "took his talents" to the Miami Heat. I chose that time to declare my sole support to Miami and with it brought my first of twenty one NBA jerseys (collector). Forgetting the Nets debacle, Mourning is my favourite All-Time player (D-Wade is a close, close second) and I treasure the gear I have featuring his mug or name on the back.

As for those who jumped aboard when LeBron and Bosh came on board, welcome. Your in for a ride and you will learn to love the Miami Heat. I'd suggest you are a little late given D-Wade should have been enough, though your welcome all the same.

I've had the privledge of sitting in on four games at the American Airlines Arena (though I am told that's a little harder these days) and I look forward to getting back amongst it with new and old fans. I will be back in 2011.

I feel ya homie ( aussie) Much respect on the respective on this. You can't control everybody, but bandwagon Fans suck some of the life out of sports. I been a long time Hawks Fan and we are on the upswing. But it is part of being a sport fan going through the ups and downs with your team. It makes sports fun, you can't win"em all

I'm with you and I'm one of those non-bandwagon fans who have been supporting the Heat for several years now. I've supported them though high times and low times, and always believed in the players on the team at any particular time. I was actually for LBJ going elsewhere for the love of LBJ vs Dwade. I loved those match ups, however I'm not going to act like I'm not proud to call all 3 players Miami Heat players.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

KidHypeTellem, I hope I don't give the impression I ain't proud to call LeBron or Bosh Heat players Any one wearing our uniform I am proud to call a Heat fan.

All the best.

Well hopefully we get some more "bandwagoners" when we win some more titles over the next five to seven years MCdodgers99

@T3B0W Oh no you don't at all. And I'm with you on that, as I said, if you're playing for my team you have my support.

Hell yeah man, people are getting annoying with all the assumptions about how some of us became Heat fans. I've supported the Heat since before they had Wade yet everyone who's not a Heat fan acts like I'm below them or something because they assume I'm another bandwagon fan. I'm not hyped on LeBron though, I think he poorly handled the situation with that TV special. I'd rather support Wade and Bosh than LeBron to be honest. I was hoping we would sign Bosh anyway so I have no problem with him coming to Miami.

I just hope I can get tickets to some games this season, the AAA is bound to be overrun by LeBron riders who are just Heat fans because of him. Oh and Alonzo Mourning is a beast, dude is a straight up warrior.

Haha, I could of wrote that blog word for word, except i'm across the Tasman, and LJ was the reason I followed the Hornets back then, with Zo a close second.
I loved when he took his talents to Miami, him and Wade winning that championship was brilliant!

I wasn't too stoked when 'the King' signed up with the Heat, I thought they'd done well enough picking up Bosh to be contenders, and I knew it'd cause a lot of "you just jumped on the bandwagon" talk.

Stillo, I can't wait for the season to start, it's certainly going to be interesting.

Nice read.

Great to see I ain't the only one in this boat guys

It's going to be a great season and I am looking forward to it. It's going to be a rollercoaster and with a great NBA game in NBA 2k11 on it's way, this season I feel is going to be one to remember.

HiTEqMETHOD - I hear you, man. Everyone gives me crap all the time about being from Toronto but supporting the Heat. I still love the Raptors. But the Heat grew on me during Tim Hardaway's reign.

I used to hate the Heat before moving down here. The days of Rony Seikaly were the days I despised them most. It wasn't until after my first two or three years of being down here that I started to like the Heat.
With that said, I would have liked to see Lebron go to another team, but I'm not against him being here. I'm really hoping this year is the year people start seeing Wade for the great player he truly is.

He took Miami to the playoffs on his back with little help from his teammates TWO years in a row. Took the Hawks to game 7 in 2009 and decimated the Celtics in game 4 by himself. I don't see Miami losing too many games this year with the reinforcements we have in place.

There's always gonna be enough room on the bandwagon for people to hop on. If you think it's bad now, wait until April/May. Ha.

Good read!

Thanks for the comments SouthBeach

Loyalty will be rewarded in funny ways as sports fans, I think we will get paid off quite handsomely over the next five to seven years MVP23 There are quite a few battles I am looking forward to next season though LA Lakers vs Miami Heat is mouth watering.

Bring on the season!

born and raised in miami, heat fan my whole life. i was there when they won 15 games and i was there when they beat the mavs. I was a fan when they got bosh and lbj and i'd still be a fan if they lost dwade. i also went to a game against philly that antwan walker single handedly lost by deciding to shoot about 17 jumpshots that backironed in case anyone wanted to know.

Thank you, been a heat fan since dwade!!

Good Blog. I should start by saying I been a heat fan since 1999. I go to about 20+ games every season and watch the rest on TV. Remember like it was yesterday all those battles vs the Knicks and Alan houston hitting that last second shot, as well as clarence weatherspoon taking the last shot to win a series, smh. But our luck started changing when we drafted #3 and then got Shaq and won the chip on 06. Since then its been about ups and downs and 1st round exits in the playoffs. We could have gotten some better players the past couple of years but Riles wanted to wait for the Summer of 2010 to do what he wanted to do as he said in his own words "to build a dynasty". And for those who say Miami fans are not loyal fans, thats BS. There are crappy fans in every city for every team as well as good and loyal fans. So let all the haters hate and talk all the smack they want, cuz all the Heat are gonna do is just WIN! Go HEAT!
