Getting It Right: What NBA 2K14 can fix Stuck
Posted on March 25, 2013 at 10:40 AM.

I freely admit it: when it comes to video game basketball, I love the little things. I don't mean getting the sneakers and accessories right—although when I see people who do obsess about such stuff, I have no problem with it, just because my own concerns are so specific and micro-tuned.

As someone who writes about the real-life NBA a fair amount, what I'm most interested in are the ways that NBA 2K can bring the game closer to that real life sport. I'm fine with having the ability to tweak the game to allow for a more fun, fast-paced game, and I don't need it to be super-realistic out of the box, but I think there's room for 2K Sports to fix some very specific things.

Defensive schemes
It's natural that the defensive part of NBA 2K lags behind the offensive part—dunks and 3-pointers are where the glory is and they're fun. But as the saying goes, defense wins championships, and there's so much more NBA 2K could do on the defensive side of the ball. They've improved your ability to set defensive schemes for individual players in terms of how your players double or hedge, but that's based on individual players, whereas a large part of NBA defense is reacting to the situation.

It would be great to be able to replicate a defensive scheme like Tom Thibodeau's for the Bulls where pick and rolls near the sidelines are always forced to the baseline. Or Miami's strategy of trapping the ballhandler if they cross halfcourt near the sidelines. As it is, doubles and traps in 2K start animations that are barely useful, especially when bringing down a guard to double in the post. Some guys are good at that and some guys are bad, but in NBA 2K, all the guards are universally terrible at it.

If 2K could make defense both rewarding and important in the game, you just might see more people picking teams like Indiana or Memphis, and that would be pretty cool.

Chemistry
The way chemistry works right now in Association mode and My Player mode seems to be either completely predictable or completely unpredictable: if guys don't play, they get angry and play worse, or else they go through ups and downs that seem unattached to their circumstances. It would be great to see chemistry that's based on real factors like playing time (including when in the game guys are played), amount of plays called, and other things, but that's harder to fix. You can't just throw time at guys to make them happier. Some guys are happier coming off the bench. Some guys will not get better no matter how much time you throw at them. In essence, chemistry is not hard to perceive, but the challenge is not fixing it, it's working around it.

And in My Player, it's relatively easy to keep pushing your chemistry with your teammates in the right direction by answering the press conference questions with the obvious correct answer. Those press conferences need to matter more or be done away with. It would be nice, also, to not have them at a table with a room full of reporters after every game. Having them happen where they really do—in the locker room—would be more realistic, plus create more drama for when they move to something more formal in the playoffs.

Player models
I've said it before but first and foremost: For Pete's sake can we get some new hairstyles for created players? Just do it.

Secondly, it's high time that 2K introduced a separate wingspan measurement for players. That's a simple thing that can create more variance across created players and make drafting rookies in Association more interesting. To go along with that, there should be more impact for a player's physical size in the game. A slim rookie is going to get banged around, but I want the ability to make a truly slender guy like Larry Sanders or Alexey Shved or make a tank like Nikola Pekovic.

My Player/My Career
My Career is the mode I play the most, and it has some significant problems. In NBA 2K13, the way Virtual Currency is set up leads to a real problem: you earn so little VC for playing the actual mode—even though that's where you spend your VC—that it's actually easier to develop your player through playing any mode EXCEPT My Career. But at the same time, it's still possible to dominate the mode with a player who's only ranked 65 or so. The result is a mode where it's difficult to improve your created player by playing, yet there's also little incentive to improve him.

You can see this most starkly in the drills, which have reached a whole new level of meaninglessness in NBA 2K13. In 2K12, I only ever ran the Dribble Course because it was the only one I knew for sure I could pass, plus it helped boost Speed, the most expensive stat to raise. But in 2K14, the paltry VC reward for passing a drill is outweighed by the boredom and frustration of doing the drill.

Maybe the essential problem is that practice is boring, and not something anyone wants to spend time doing in a video game. But I think this could be fixed by drills that reward you even when you don't fulfill their requirements. After all, it isn't just success that teaches you, but failure. Maybe you don't get a boost to Ballhandling or Speed if you fail the Dribble Course, but you should get a boost to your Stamina just for running up and down the court. Right now, if you can't do them perfectly, the drills are a waste of time. Is this really what we should be teaching our children? If you elect to work on training, it should always benefit your player in some way, even if it's small.

These are just a few suggestions, and admittedly from someone who doesn't spend much time playing online. So I want to know, what else needs to be fixed going forward in NBA 2K14?

2 more things.....WHY IS IT (almost happens 1/29999 times) IMPOSSIBLE TO BLOCK A DUNK!! .........and remove those weird leaning layups

# 17 KidHypeTellem @ Mar 25
loool @LoveBasketball yea them knicks jerseys are off, as well as a few others colors.
Also agree on the shoes too. Look like bricks. Take a look at the D Roses shoes loool

# 18 LoveBasketball @ Mar 25
@KidHypeTellem I know lol, this should be easy stuff for them, shouldn't of even been a problem in the first place....They also need to bring back accessory layering, I have no clue why they made it impossible to have those long knee pads like wade & JR smh

# 19 kamackeris76 @ Mar 25
they need to fix the AI management of teams in association mode....its daft that to get realistic results/trades/contracts/drafts etc we need to micro manage ourselves with a 30 team association

# 20 cmehustle @ Mar 25
I wish they would have the actual draft picks included. For instance the Cavs have the right to switch with the heat and take their first round pick or wait until another season. Or the Thunder have Houston's first round pick from Toronto. Or the T wolves have the K nicks first round pick. These are incentives to use these teams in an association, instead of everyone going after the Heat and Lakers.

Having players help other players up would be great AND they definitely need to fix the reaction to player injuries. When a player goes down, now he rolls around on the ground while his teammates awkwardly look away and refuse to come anywhere close to him. It would be huge for the feel of the game if there were more drama attached to an injury.

Me personally I think 2k needs to finally address footplanting, if 2k can add realistic foot planting the game would improve tremendously, cheesers won't have the ability to defend the paint and three point line at once, on ball defense would be better, and the crossovers wouldn't feel so robotic.

Passing is still garbage- it's not just the pass speed but the animation, so many times I've seen a player do a entry pass into the post, when I just wanted to hit my big man on the pick n roll or the striving man coming down in my fastbreak.

Physics- probably the worse part of 2k's game, it improved over 2k12, but it's no where near good, players still run through defenders when the defender beat them to the spot, dunking over multiple big man or defenders is still possible and big man can be stopped by the smallest gaurd.

Isomotion- I like the control scheme the way it is, I think isomotion isn't really close to a realistic ball handling system, moves are to limited, can't really combo moves, for example I can't do a stutter or in and out move into a crossover without my player still having to move towards the defender, The move list are too simple, it's either standing moves or fastbreak moves, can't really set moves up because of the moves being limited to standing or moving. There was a significant lag in the input and move, when I want to do a crossover I should do it when I do the input.

As far as graphics, player bodies are terrible, there was barely any significant graphical upgrade from 2k12, jerseys are TOO BIG, their armholes are TOO BIG, shorts are too baggy, it's not authentic at all, Colors are off as well courts, jerseys, gear and sneakers.

Player models are too muscular, 2k needs to add a variety of NEW player models and stop using the old ones, also please get rid of the dynamic update for player models, faces and gear, since it's false advertising.

I'm done.

Eh what about servers? Crew mode? Leagues?

Fixes/Additions:

1. More editing tools as we each have a distinct view of how the NBA is, therefor, we should be able to fit the game into our own unique views ... nothing should be hidden, everything should be editable ... maybe incorporate an official roster/association editor, even as a paid DLC, thus exponentially expanded to edit all and have a better Create A Player / Create A Team / Create A Coach.

2. More individual & team Tendencies, Ratings, Signatures & Playbooks ... is the only way to try and simulate the game as close as the NBA.

3. A bug/glitch free stats screen, we have yet to see it for 3 straight years (altered stats, incomplete team records, league avg ratings & tendencies dont vary neither as season goes nor as edits are made).

4. Incorporation of all missing rules/boundaries/features like 10 day contracts (this one in roster management), sign & trades, multiteam trades initiated by CPU, tie brake seeding, homecourt advantage, etc.

5. Better substitution logic, for in game and for minutes distribution.

6. Better GM logic for drafting, team building, finances, etc.

7. To have separate edits/fixes/settings for offline and online.

8. To have better official roster updates, that at least can keep up with player movement but not solely restricted to only that, but that could also do updates to all players and not just some and ideally based all of the basic and advanced stats available.

9. To integrate some sort of monthly show into association, that presents annalisis to payers and team trends and moves, as well as pictures or highlights of plays of the month.

10. Custom rosters & draft classes incorporated to Online Association and My Career.

11. An option for an "interconnected" (online) my career, where 30 players compete for draft ranking, then get drafted by 30 teams and then have a connected career, where they choose to either go alone or join other my players to try and form super teams.

12. To be able to see others playing a game and to be able to have 2 players play online with a single console.

I would like them to fix the game. Graphics are going to improve. We are going to get more shoes and more modes. I play the game online and as a result its unplayable. The Idea of a continuing association is brilliant and should be commonplace. However does not work in 2k and I don't know if its a priority. I have been in several online associations and none have actually finished. When they did finish it did not work. The online play needs to be improved greatly.

1.They need to decrease the lag of online gaming.
2.They need to bring back some of the online features such as playing regular association games against online opponents.
3.Online association does not need to include all 30 teams. That is far too much! I would be fine with an 8 team association with flex play. I would be ok with the old leagues with continued season.
4. Online associations trades and free agent signings need to be immediate.
5. fix the lag
6. fix the lag
7. fix the lag. I don't care if we lose the crowd or commentary online play needs to be as lag free as possible.

# 26 schnaidt1 @ Mar 25
i want more immersion in the game. better crowd sounds. anyone go pop in college hoops 2k8 an an tell me that crowd doesnt make u feel immersed.

more spread our ratings.
fix the potential system
update graphics.
FIX PASSING!!

give a playoff atmosphere.

revamp association mode. and fix trade finder its way to easy to make the charlotte bobcats a playoff team with a few trades.

improve control responsiveness. i cant use shot stick anymore because of the lag in response time.

fix blocking an rebounding.

fix fouling an add different ref crews who call the game differently a la " the show"

A dream of mine here: I wish there were more slider options

I am thinking like post defense sliders and such and such, but my real want is game mode sliders. For example, in association you could use sliders to determine how often trades, injuries, hirings/firings occur. Also things like signs waivings, stuff like amnesty.

Most of all in association, I wish that it was like CH2k8 in the sense that you could play a few years without the entire league being generics that all look alike and have crazy ratings.

Association should let us decide what position we want to hold within the NBA organization:

Owner
GM
Coach
AC
Player/Prospect Scout
Trainer (Mabey)

Each position holds authority, decision making, and risk (job security meter). With every position under a contract, and with the oppurtunty of advancement whether with the same team or another, whether at the same position or another(career carousal).

Career Responsibilities
Owner Controls- Hire, fire, fire during the season, tickets, drinks, overall merchandise price control, moving team, overriding other career decisions, etc.

GM Controls- Contracts, drafting, stashing players overseas, loyalty, personalities, trades, send players to d-league, team building, handle injury, player meetings, pre-draft interviews, etc.

Head Coach Controls- Create team play style, playbook, team rotation and player roles, locker room control, pep talks, in game strategies and adjustments, scout other teams, scout prospect, run the teams Pre-draft workouts, etc.

Asst. Coach Controls- Assist head coach in games, training camp, practices drill, coach summer league team, assist in in game play call, etc.

Scout Controls- Evaluate NBA, college, euro, d-league prospects, stats, scout NBA draft combine, *put together team pre-draft workouts, scout summer league, etc.

Association additions:

1. Training Camp should begin our Association. The real NBA season starts with TC.

2k should allow us to compose a TC roster consisting of undrafted rookies, free agents, and our contract players. 2k should let us run drills, condition, set improvement, as well as aid players with the playbook. We would cut players, creating our pre-season and regular season rosters.

2. During the season have meaningful practices.

Practices should be about going the last game and preparing for next opponent. Rehabbing injured players working out late free agents signing etc. Practice is important to player progression.

3. In season scouting/NBA.com.

We are the scouts, so we should be able to create a target list of possible draft prospects from the generic or created 2k draft classes. We should get weekly updates from the scouts (us) about the latest big board, draft stock, latest college, international, and d-league stats, strengths, weaknesses, personality types etc. Also there should be a section in nba.com that has draft information like espn.com. This should be a drafting tool for the guys who aren’t into the scouting aspect. Also prospects should have their class freshman, sophomore, Junior, Senior with ages.

4. Pre-Draft Scouting Features

I feel this is the most slept on aspect of association; it’s remained the same for years.

The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is the 64 best NCAA senior draft prospects. They are borderline second rounders looking to improve draft stock. PIT is an 8-team, 12-game tournament held over a four-day period. April 11th to April 14th. (Jimmy Butler, Landry Fields, and Jeremy Lin are some alum)

Draft Combine the interviews, measurements, and athletic testing. The combine is drill based, there are no scrimmages. June 6th to 8th in Chicago.

Pre-Draft Workouts there is usually about 6 players going through various drills in a team’s practice facility. Lottery picks usually workout alone. May to June.

ADIDAS Euro Camp is where international prospects show their talents in front of NBA GMs. We should be able to watch and play with up and coming NBA prospects, seeing whose got potential. It’s like the draft combine but with scrimmages and daily culminating all-star games. Not all who attend declare for the draft, so there should be guys who attend the next year. Measurements should be taken. (would create more euro buyers)

5. Draft

After you draft euros you should be able to have a option to keep them overseas “draft and stash”. While you will be updated on their progress by your player scout, or give buyout options if their still under contract. Also prospects should be able to withdraw their names from the draft.

6. Las Vegas Summer League (July 13th – 22nd) Orlando Pro Summer League (July 9th -13th)

Crazy important to the configuration of your team. As the GM we should be able to put together our summer league teams. We should be able to scout all games. Stats and evaluations should be kept for training camp reference. (Adopting NCAA style tournament)

7. NPBA Top 100 Camp

I just feel we should get a beat on the college talent(Fr,So,Jr,Sr). All drill and scrimmage events the skills academies are position oriented, measurements should be taken to see growth in the future. I believe all this event is open to NBA scouts.

8. D-League

Bring it back, and include the D-League Showcase (Jan 7-10)

9. Development drills

Revamp, give it a connection to player progression like CHOOPS 2K8.

My Player:

"I have a way 2k can appeal to both sides, sim and casual:

We should choose résumés:

Top Pick
Top 5
Lottery
Mid to late 1st Round
2nd Round
Undrafted

Each résumé would have age, class, college or euro stats, strengths and weaknesses, NBA comparisons, personality, etc.

Next:

Hire Agent
Buy apartment (not a fan, but with the new stuff, can’t see why not)
Hire Trainer- Workout in preparation for Draft

Then (all in accurate order):

Portsmouth- is the 64 senior draft prospects, looking to improve draft stock. PIT is an 8-team, 12-game tournament held over a four-day period. April 11th to April 14th.
(Résumé, seniors 2nd round and undrafted)

NBA Draft Combine- in reality it’s the interviews, measurements, and athletic testing. The combine is drill based, there are no scrimmages. June 6th to 8th in Chicago.
(Résumé Top 60 best prospects, both international and college)

Euro Camp- Three day camp, internationals only, top prospect going through measurements, drills, daily scrimmages, and daily cumulative all star games.
(Euros)

Pre draft workouts- Every prospect with a shot at the NBA workouts for teams with interest. Doing various drills assigned. Coaching staff, management, and scouts are all there.
(Every Résumé)

All these events really exist, unlike the showcase thing.

Summer League- Not optional, unless injury.
(Every Résumé)

D-League- If you get assigned, you go.
(Every Résumé)

Training camp
(Every Résumé)

*Top picks choose to participate in the combine. Users who have no interest, you'd get measured at the combine, but your agent would say the my player (you) will only participate in team workouts. Just like real top picks and lotteries do."

I want basketball not highlightball

# 30 kareem434 @ Mar 25
I have a billion ideas but here's a quick over view.

Association coaches need to have there own styles and special skills that translate throught there respective teams.

Association team owners should have goals ex: win a championship, earn more money, or make the playoffs or just improve over last season. based on a coaches ability to meet these goals determines how long the coach is gonna hold that position.

Association players should have to rank his priorities ex. Big market vs small market, money vs less money, bench vs starter, home town team yes or no.

My player mode should have full practices with scouting reports on the players your about to face. Practices should have the.sets you are going to run during the.game along with defensive strategies a coach may employee based on that coaches philosophy on doubling stars or the post or playing off certain players. You should get a certain amount of practice points that earn you more minutes but its not about excelling by scoring 80 baskets its more about executing the game plan.
. Also there should be individual player development time.

Fiba should be implemented as well as an Olympics every 4 years

Association the ablitiy to expand the league and or customize all thirty teams to make completely new.ones Jersey and stadiums.

A mentoring player skill should be added for older players that improves the prospects on there team in there positions and boost them in the old players best attributes.
