With all the hype over each new years release, like FIFA 15, NHL 15, Madden 15, etc. our industry is stuck in a 9 month cycle that really doesn't promote or encourage what we want the most at the very core of our experience as sports gamers: innovation. Why not, instead of a yearly-cramped cycle that is more marketing driven than gameplay, develop a system where you pay a yearly subscription fee and that developer constantly updates the game? No more Madden 16, 17, or 18 but 'EA Sports Madden NFL'. The subscription fee should be at the developer's discretion. Most of know not buy a game over $60 as that is the generally the maximum amount for console games, but I think if the system continues to work and more capital is being poured into the developers can raise their subscription fee if necessary. Or lower it if that's what the market calls for.
The developers also could have more an open-door policy with fans of the game. If the developers let those who buy the yearly subscription know what the vision for the next couple years are long-term, and what cool new features are being updated monthly to the game for the short-term.
Our culture is taking shape and with the way we have the ability to be connected to so many different people around the world through the internet is changing the way we ought to do business.
I have no say and this probably won't find someone with enough influence in the industry to even entertain this a serious thought, but this might indeed be the future of sports gaming. I'm not the first and I won't be the last. I definitely see this as a possibility where both the developer and publisher work in harmony with the people paying subscription fee. This would dramatically change sports gaming for the better and I would love to see what the developers, programmers, and designers could come up with without the pressure of the yearly release. Combine this all with a financially supportive community that pays a one-time yearly subscription fee of at least $60, and I think this model only encourages something we all want at the very core of our sports gaming experience: innovation.
