Skate 2 Coming Today Stuck
Posted on January 22, 2009 at 03:10 AM.
While I am not much for writing blogs, I cannot sleep and need something to do. I cannot sleep because of my excitement, and I am heartily excited for Skate 2, the anticipated sequel to one of my favorite games.

Skate 2 drops today, and I will be able to pick it up at GameStop some time in the afternoon. Once this happens, I guarantee that I won't be around OS as much as I'd like. I'll be stuck on the futon, playing this game and drinking Coke and eating Hot Tamales until I keel over from tiredness. Then a brief nap. Then I'll do it again.

It's unclear how many OSers are hyped for this game, just because the "All Other Sports" section of the forums is not as populated as, say, the NBA 2K section. Still, I know you're out there, Skate fans. Maybe you can help me to add some ideas here.

For those who don't know, the Skate 2 demo, it played anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, then you go through a quick ad loop and back to the start. From playing the demo, though, I have a sense of a couple things I may want to improve. I'll see if the final version is the same as the demo, and I think it will be, but I do have some concerns.

More than anything, though, I need to talk about some new tricks I would like to see in future versions of the game. Skate 3 wishlist?

Skate 2: My soon-to-be addiction

Here is a post I had on the EA message boards circa January 2008 -- over a year ago, and about 3.5 months after the release of Skate. thanks to the screwy release schedule that EA has devised. As you may or may not see, many of the tricks I had wanted will actually be in Skate 2. So to plant the idea now, this is my short-list of tricks for Skate 3... jumping the gun, yes, but I am a visionary that way.

1. DARKSLIDES

For those who don't know, a darkslide is like a boardslide on the grip-tape side of your board. It seems like a lot of pro skaters do them. Even out of guys in the game, Eric Koston, Chris Cole (1:13 in video), and Chris Haslam (0:59) have all done darkslides. Darkslides have been in the last 8 Tony Hawk games, as well as in the somewhat-fun Thrasher Skate and Destroy as a special trick. People do them, kids like them, and they could show off a new grip tape wear-and-tear engine, because they do mess it up. Badly.

2. ONE-FOOTED MANUALS

Inexplicably, these were left out of Skate 2. Well, maybe the producers thought it unrealistic, but again, people do them. Again, Chris Haslam (1:34), one of the series' favorite skaters, does them. What baffles me is that there are one-foot and no-foot controls in the game, yet one-footers never extend to manuals. There are only two manuals in Skate 2, and it gets boring. Adding manuals doesn't mean the series will devolve to ridiculous Tony Hawk freestyle. Just use the controls that are there and give us one-footed manuals, and while you're at it, one-footed grinds (Chris Haslam again).

3. WALLIE FOOTPLANTS

Again, the system is there for footplants, but you cannot do them so that you contact the wall with just your foot. It is a very cool trick when done right, but it cannot be done normally in the game. If you go toward a wall at a perfect angle and extend your foot, you will collapse on contact. It's a small trick that rarely comes up, but it is fun and it would be fun to do in the game.

So there you have it. Hopefully I wore off some energy and can get to sleep, because I have a big day of "skating" ahead of me. If you have your ideas for must-have tricks, post 'em here! Happy gaming.
